 Update, new computer
« Thread Started on Nov 24, 2008, 10:12pm »

;D ;D Phew, I'm back again after spending the past few days with my new laptop. I downloaded all the gidgets, gadgets and programs that I needed. This laptop with VISTA is a new beast to learn. One thing I can say is that the laptop and it's installed platform is sure busy. I did download one program from the internet and from what I read in a magazine article and the website, this is supposed to be a FREE program. It gives you the ability to log on to your computer at home frome a remote spot, if you go roaming. I tried this out and voila! it seems to work. the program can be downloaded from:
http://logMein.com
If this program continues to work, it"ll be great. When I tried it out, there I was, looking at my home computer. The only thing that might be a sort of downside is that your home computer must be turned on. This doesn't mean that your monitor must be turned on.
Now it is time to get back to reading what has happened in the forum. By the way, I still like Hocky Sticks and Moose Chili wit maybe a Mooseburger thrown in. ;) ;) ;D

Bob

Happy to see your return! I think you will enjoy your new lap-top as I do mine. I enjoy the VISTA system programme more so over the old XP. But, it as you see, a new process of learnt, for as the same programme is installed, but it is under a different label {some what aggravating until one understand the logic}.

What I initially learnt on mine, is the concentrated effort Microsoft uses for security. I am not sure that of what you have experienced, but mine was very busy most of a day downing loading 1 programme after another and then more again.

Mine is number one, my work computer with only a thought of use as a personal communication machine.

But---no moose Chile came with it :'(for what is this? :-/

Thanks Karl, I agree completly: Vista is indeed different than XP2 and I may have a steep learning curve with this platform but it may be indeed a lot better than the Xp, time will tell.
The Lenovo laptop is a great portable machine and it has a lot of features that are basic as well as the added features. There is no way that i could have afforded this computer if it had been bought brand new because a new one with all the features would have neared the $2000 mark. The good thing about the refurbished type of purchase was that the PC was throughly checked out by a factory tech in the workshop and if there might have been a glitch, it was corrected. I did get a full warrenty and there is a lot of online and telephone help available. I also looked at the Dell, ASUS and Acer models. The one feature I liked about the Lenovo is that it is built very strong and can withstand some very severe shocks. The PC has the Vista Business platform but I won't be using the business part much however I am well satisified with what I now have.
Just think, we all came into this world bare naked and not two pennies to rub between our fingers and now we have a lot of toys to play with. ;) :D ;D

yeah I, too, am breaking in a new pc-but it is a desktop. Our daughter built this for me. It's more high tech, more ram, more storage than I'll ever need,,,but it remains XP. I am not to keen on Vista yet; altho the hardware in this box can handle whatever Vista needs.
I play alot games and do our family history book on it and go shopping! What else is a
girl suppose to do?!?

;) ;D Hi Joyce. That home-built computer sounds great. I have seen many articles and step-by-step instructions on putting together a home-built computer and there were computers that were well under $1000 but would cost $3,000 IF you bought it already made, from a store or on-line. I even saw a step-by-step instruction on how to build you own laptop. The one thing I can say is that these were VERY awsome machines, Of course you can buy laptops and desktops that start at $3000+ and go up,up,,up and up. I have even seen some video cards that cost $900 without blinking an eye. A lot of these machines are targeted toward avid gamers or developers so, they are more of a business investment than a computer for the average user. I know that you will enjoy the machine that your daughter made and it will be a lot better than the one you buy off the shelf. ;D ;D

I have always had a second hand pc-usually when someone upgraded I got their box.
Until I got the money together and started buying machines from a real pc tech, not from a chain or a large company. With the real pc shop techs comes the personalized support.
My pc now cost me $456.00. I'm gonna have type in a condensed version of what's in it-so if you can see if I got a good deal.

;D ;) OK Joyce i'll wait for your post. Those home built computers I told you about: The prices for the components have have decreased and their capacity has improved and became greater. I recently upgraded my desktop by putting in a new higher capacity power supply (600watts Vs. the 200 watt factory installed one) the 12 volt bus was increased from an 18 amp. capacity to 30 amp. capacity, this is required for the upgraded video card. I had the standard factory installed low capacity video card and upgraded to a video card that gave me 512Mbs and two digital outputs. The total cost of the upgrade was less than $120 but, the improvement was noticable and great. Many upgrade parts can be had on deep discounted prices. I have many, many years left on my desktop. The thing about having the computer built for you is that you can get what you want. One thing I can add is that the BelArc advisor is a very good program to put in your computer. This program will take an inventory of everything that is inside your computer (hardware and software) and then you can print out a copy. The inventory can be used by a tech in case a repair has to be made and it is usefull to you because it gives you a description of software and license numbers; it also provides serial numbers . :) :) ;)

The info you requested

Memory Patriot DDR2 PC 6400 69.99
processor AMD Athlon 64 5000 36.51

Vdieo Card Vision Tek 2600xt hand me down 0.00

There was an extra 40 bucks for something-I forget what is was, but I am not complaining.
I think I got a good deal...Ij just wanted something that would work consistently. Yeah, I know about the Belarc Advisor-that's a nifty little program. I have it on my other XP Pro too. Even with this new pc, I still haven't gotten rid of my old XP...not that I need it...

That sounds like a very good computer and all for less than $500. If you bought a similar computer off the shelf it probably would have cost you at least double. The $0.00 that the video card cost was a very good buy too, LOL You didn't go wrong and that sounds like a very solid machine. I also don't like the integrated video cards. As far as I am concerned, let the processor do processing (i.e. Processing, Video and Audio). You also have a lot of top notch names in you rig (Antec, Thermaltake and Samsung). Some people say there is a difference between AMD and Intel processors but for the average user who is not an avid gamer or Media Center Nut, any one of the two processors will do nicely. All in all you have a solid machine at a great price. ;) :)

Bob,

Have you considered SATA SSD Drives? I know they are new but the prices are coming down quite a bit.

JJ My desktop has a serial drive , it is a Western Digital and I think it is the Raptor but it could be the Cavier. Anyway it has been a solid performer. I have seen those Solid State Drives but they are VERY expensive. Let us hope that the price of theses units will fall in the future.. My processor in the desktop is a AMD core2 Dual code named (AMD live). The processor in my new laptop is the Intel core2 dual with a 7400rpm hard drive.. Today I picked up a copy of "Maxiimum PC" and there was an artical about "oil cooled PC's". I use to think that water cooled PC's were a little too much but, oil cooled is extreme.. Speaking of precessors; Core 2's are fairly common now but now they have core 4 processors. ;D ;D
