Santa Claus Jaga, I didn't see the CBS version. Why do you think it's better than the ABC version? Carl

Hi, Husband and I just finished watching the CBS movie...was it better than the ABC one? It is longer...second part on Wednesday evening... - shows more of his life during the Nazi and Soviet times in Poland;
- shows more of his time in teaching and in Krakow;
- shows that he was indeed a complex man
- CBS version plays up his Polishness and the important link between Poland and her people, and the R.C. Church
- maybe as one reviewer stated, the ABC version showed him as martyr; the CBS version shows him as man
At least we have prime time programing that is not "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll." GM

I agree with Jaga that the CBS version is much better than the ABC version - it must be that to compress the Pope's life into a 2-hr TV movie just does not allow enough time for the details that make his story so compelling.
I still prefer the actor who played Pope in the Hallmark movie - as good as the CBS actor was, there is something not quite Polish enough about him. However, as the CBS Pope aged a bit, he seemed to capture some of the postures very well (e.g., when bending over the sick lady in the hospital). I am not looking forward to seeing Jon Voight as Pope - if he can make me see beyond the actor, then maybe I will accept him in the role.
The CBS movie protrayed the "miracle cure" better than the Hallmark movie.
Isn't it nice to have three treatments to compare? So far, I would rank them Hallmark>CBS >>>ABC.

Nancy - I had not a very good vision of CBS channel here where I live so, for me the actor was almost pefect since I did not see exactly his features... so I could imagine many things I actually think that this movie was better than Hallmart since in Hallmart these stories of the spy and healing were probably overdramatized.

Thanks, guys. I liked the ABC version because it focused on politics and the universal contributions of Pope John Paul II. I understand that Catholic means universal. Carl

Carl I don't think anyone thought you post was offensive. The post was adressed to Jaga and she is busy but I am sure she will respond soon. I didn't post my feelings about the movie as it a two parter (the second is showing on wednesday) and I wanted to wait until I had seen the whole thing before I posted. However, I will say this, I am enjoying the CBS version more than the ABC version. I enjoyed the Hallmark version but I fell asleep during the last half hour! I would really like to see the entire Hallmark presentation as I found it moving. Okay?

Unfortuantely I started to watch the movie and next thing I remember is waking up... this has been a big problem of late. Getting too comfortable and falling asleep.uuughh!!! I did watch the previous one last week. I enjoyed it but thought it was more like a news clip and jumped around too much with no explanations. The actor I thought looked so like the pope. I believe he was German.

Carl Carl, thank you for your opinion. Actually, ABC version was liked by the men. A husband of my Polish friend from IF also liked ABC version better. I understand that for every person some other issues are important!

Hello -
I came home early enough from the two days of avalanche training and rescue exercise in the mountains to clean up and catch the show. I could have used the sleep, but watching was well worth it. The early history interested me as I expected it would, but I was surprised and pleased that the presentation of the church history as well. It was not as dry and sanitized as I feared it could be.
Somewhere in the middle of the movie he made a gesture that I felt certain was quite un-Polish, but then I had to ask myself how I should know what a Polish gesture was at that time! I wish I could remember what exactly it was. It was interesting to see how they presented the development of the accommodation between the church and state.
I will definitely try to catch le last part tomorrow evening. He was a fascinating man, and that is the least I can do since he took the trouble to chase me down three times in the world just to wave hello and say Hi! (Mexico City, Fairbanks Alaska and Vilnius, Lithuania).
