Movies at the Public Library

On another forum someone suggested I go to the library to check out "Shop on Main Street". I did, but the big discovery was to see how many foreign films are in their collection! While I have a limited number of "Czechoslovak" films there, if I look at the Polish, Ukrainian and Russian films there is a good variety to choose from.
Another I chose was "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" which is about the Hutsils in the Carpathian Mountains, close enough to the Hungarian (Slovak) border for Magyars to play in once scene.
Of course I am dependent upon the subtitles for understanding, though I can pick out a word or two here and there.

While the reviews are handy, they are often conflicting and inaccurate, and often reflect the reviewer's ignorance of the people portrayed, so the reviewer misinterprets some of the scenes.

In any case, I suggest you check out your own local library and see what they may offer. Whether fiction or "historical", it is good to keep in mind that these films probably receive a Hollywood gloss, and they represent Poland as closely as Hollywood films represent the USA.

Thanks for seconding my opinion to a solution that nearly always works...the local public library.

Because husband and I volunteer at ours once per week, this is usually the first place I search for anything I need or want. If our local library doesn;t have the item, I search through three of the MA systems available to me online that allow me to order items and then have htem delivered to my local library.

If I still can't find the item, I ask the librarian to do her magic search (more data bases are availabe to librarians than the public) and order through interlibrary loan. This is the way I am able to obtain many Polish books as well as videos.

As a matter of fact, I have one waiting for me at the library for when we get back home on Friday.

GM...why did I not think of it before as it was there in front of me always. I use the library to get the books but never thought to check with them for videos. I shall do that next time I get a chance. I also can log in to our system on line and go through their database and as you said if it is not available through the library then can check to see if it is available through the intra library and have it sent to my library branch (Yesterday I picked up "And the Violins Stopped Playing" that way).

I used to rent lots of movies from the public library in Fort Worth, where we lived there. They had some interesting movies, French and Italian.
LAter we moved to Maryland and the library was not that well equipped and we had to pay for renting the movies!
Here in Idaho Falls there are not many foreign movies unfortunately. Maybe I have to move to Alaska!

See if your local library does interlibrary loan; or perhaps you can get movies or do interlibrary loan through the University.
