yesterday I finally watched the rest of the movie by Gore. He has some good arguments that the current global warming is caused by people rather than by nature since the level of CO2 is much higher.
Pieter - Holland was mentioned several times - one time because of some research done on some birds affected by a change in seasons and another time to show how much land Holland would lose if the glaciers of Antarctica, Arctica and Greenland would melt increasing the see levels at about 20 meters.
Are people in Holland concerned about global warming?

Jaga,
Like in the USA and other European countries people are not that aware of what might happen in the future. People are concerned about today's or tomorrow's problems, taxes, the age of retirement, insurrance, traffic jams, their house, their car, their income, immigration, security and social security. But yes, the concious part of the population, environmentalists, my GreenLeft party, students with awareness and developped citizens, know that we live in a polluted area of the world, that the Global heating melts down the Ice of the North-Pole and South-Pole, and that our country may be under water in 50 years. So maybe in 50 years the Dutch live in Germany, Great-Britain, Poland, Canada and the USA. I really think if we don't do anything about it The Netherlands will be a relict of the past. We are a very vulnerable country. Doing something about is is developping and using better and efficient ways of Public transport, creating a less pollutive infrastructure, reducing the CF2 emmission, and thinking about Hydrogen economy and solar energy. The former German Red-Green (SPD-Bündnis90/Die Grüne) government had a very good environmental pollicy, supporting solar- and wind energy. I saw a lot of Modern windmills in Germany generating energy in Western-Germany when I travelled through Germany in the end of the ninetees and the early years of this century. Denmark too has gone very far in using these new Environment friendly ways of producing energy. Scandinavia is a very progressive and environmental area of Europe. For centuries The Netherlands (or Low lands) have fought against the sea, and often had disasters like in New Orleans. Villages and towns just disappeared in the Middle Ages into the sea. With the tides sometimes old ruins of these settlements came come blank for a short moment. I haven't seen Al Gore's movie yet, but hope to see it soon!

Pieter,
Gore's movie is very convincing. It seem to prove that the global warming now is caused not for natural causes but by humans. I am worried that even Holland would be unable to stop 20 meters more of the water level with all the newest technologies this would be simply too much!
The friend of mine just wrote from Poland that she was cleaning her balcony and the windows and that it was so amazingly warm that she had a short-sleeved shirt on. Is this not weird?

Mr. Gore has a point in the global warming cause of that of excessive CO2.. And his has a sure safe argument in that respect. For he is riding the same type of camel as the rest, because that is the safe bet.
But, he is wrong as many American politicians tend to be in matters off the shores of North America. Mr. Gore is wrong with what he leaves out. For it is not just a matter of industrial CO2 and fuel consumption rates of private owned autos.
It is a world problem that needs addressing: And, there lays the situation, {world problem}. Or, more expressly, a 3rd world problem that is effecting the industrial world of 1st world countries.
For how will an industrial country rather it be European or North American, control the slash and burn farming that has been used by farmers in Brazil since who knows, the Brazilian government has not the means to control this type of agriculture. Or for that matter the method of gold mining used with high pressure water washing of the soil for unearthing gold. or also, the cutting of forest {Amazon} to create temporary grazing for cattle. Once the soil is depleted in short time, the farmers move on with the same method. These type of soil is tropical soil, it is not very high in nutrients and will not rebuild it self because of the leaching effect of frequent rain fall.
Then there is the over population in 3rd world countries that has the lowest per-capita income. Africa is one culprit of many. For the mothers have not the means for birth control and the men folk could care less.
Now then: China. China is in the beginnings of high industrialization, as so, goes also the factor of industrial and concentrated population pollution. Those two factors create their own individual wast by products, and not good if left to nature to dispose of.
It is just not logical to expect the Industrial countries to dictate policy to 3rd world countries over their wast producing practices, and then enforce dictates over what is permissible in use practices or not. For this would have just as much success as holding our hands into the wind and expect the wind to stop. Or firing our guns into the air and expecting to hit the sky.
We are as industrial nations, stuck with the millstones of 3rd world nations on our backs to carry.
Just some thoughts
Charles

But they are not used to it at all. Overpopulation is another problem but FoxNews said that according to UN raport it is not the cars adn industry responsible for global warming but cows flatulence
