We are in Krakow now. We already made a short trip to Silesia, Katowice, to visit my only living uncle (brother of my mother). We are going to Kacwin, Spisz, on the boarder of Poland and Slovakia, where my friend's come from. We will be there July 3-6. It is very hot in Krakow and as you can imagine, I really do not have time to use internet too much.
I miss you all!

Hi Pieter and all,
we are back from Kacwin. My friend has a wonderful wooden house there. She does not have a computer or internet, by purpuse. It was a great trip but I could not e-mail or post any messages in the forum in that time. We also did not have any running water, which was not deliberate, it is just that this house is not used all the time and the repairman did not come. Interesting challenge!

Sounds like romantic, adventurous, 19th century circumstances. I remember Communist Poland when sometimes we visited some more ' primitive' rural parts of Poland, which were back then like for instance underdevelopped parts of the Ukraine or Rumania today. We had the same experiance back then. But I hope that you had fun and that after the visit you could take some shower or bath somewhere at friends or family places or a hotel. I remember that Poland on my last two visits in 2004 and 2006 looked so modern and sophisticated. Are you stil in Poland or back in the USA?

Jaga It is a quandary of proportions, if a person has never had the above, they would not miss it, but, we are modern people and it is a great inconvenience not to have what you do not there.... I am quite confident your friend is doing the best with what is available for you. I realize what I have to suggest is not so comfortable, but it works... Some poles and canvas to make an inclosure of privacy, a few clean boards to stand upon, two or three buckets of water with some soap and:::oppp that water is colddd, soap down and again over the head with a bucket full of water. By this time, the senses are half dead but boy oh boy will that after shower feel refreshing with a large sailors mug of hot black coffee...... I do hope with great trust the remainder of your visit will be uneventful and pleasant with pleanty of hot running water and good friends to be with...Oh,,,forgot,,,with the hot coffee as above mentioned, a shulsh of whisky in the coffee is really rather tasty, rum is ok and brandy. imported American corn whisky though is the ticket.. It was nice of you to think of the forum in your travels, thank you for your thoughtfulness... Karl

Hi Karl, Europe in general is more crowded and less sannitary than America. On the other hand in America we are sometimes too comfortable. Maybe there is less air conditioners on the airport in Framkkfurt, but sweating is not that bad always....
European food is also very good.

I am back in the US, in Charlotte's airport. We still have a long travel ahead of us (Salt Lake flight and getting home to Idaho), but we are at least behind our longest flight. It is after midnight european time, so I have a hard time to adjust to such a looong day.

Jaga I am happy for you and your family for a safe return from your travels and some needed time with your family in Poland. It is always good to return to your home land roots to renew the spirit and remembrances. In as well for those you have been parted from, for them is the spirit of the heart to once again have you with them, if for only a short time. For time is not our friend. I am not sure what part of Europe you were in that was so dirty, but I think I may guess,,,,,Spain. It is precisely the situation you noticed of dirt that streets and public facilities must be maintained with the highest degree of care. For if one person is to become infected or bring with them a imported infection, then others coming into contact may contract the infection to spread to others. Dirt is an inexcusable manner of tolerance, in as of housewhole, street and public facilities. In this manner of personal hygiene, is a manner of personal care and responsibility to self and others. In short, what lives on the dirt of the street, will find a way to live in and on our bodies. Karl

Welcome back, Jaga!
It is a week + after my return and I am still catching up on normal life. Well, and planning the next trip or two.
A friend moved from Alaska to Pocatello, so you stand a good chance of having me drop by to say hello sometime, perhaps early October when I am to fly out to meet a German 'niece' in the west. She will be in the US on business and proposed we get together somewhere between the east coast and Alaska for a few days.... now to find the best place. She is a city girl who enjoys civilized excursions into nature.
I have to agree on the food. European food has a different quality and taste to it, generally, one that I do enjoy! On the dirt in Europe, I did not see that, but like Karl, suspect Spain as the source of that observation.
Welcome back. I hope Ela and your husband enjoyed themselves!

Kai,
welcome home. It would be nice to see you again!
Referring to dirt, maybe my comments was not clear. I think that the fact that Europe is much older, crowded and more natural and people are walking.... besides we as tourists were always in the hurry with limited access to accomodations and dirt - make it looks less clean. The restrooms are not everywhere perfect like in the US.

We are in Idaho Falls since last night. It was a long trip. It takes extra day to come back here. Ela's first comment in America was "I see obese people again". I had to shush her We both lost our weight due to so much walking and less eating!

It's an apt comment, though - no other country has so many heavy people as the United States.
