this is true, not a joke.....
A law went recently went into effect in Poland restricting the term “Polska Wódka/Polish Vodka” to tipples produced in Poland only from grain or potatoes. Poland, the EU’s largest vodka producer, has led a drive in support of the classic definition of the drink as opposed to some European Union producers who are calling spirits distilled from grapes or other fruit vodka. The term “Polish Vodka” is to be a legally controlled geographic designation comparable to that used by Italy’s Parma ham or ricotta cheese.

Has Poland been suffering a lot from fake homemade vodka lately? This problem has been particularly acute in the Baltic republics lately. Many people have been poisoned, blinded, and even killed because they bought cheap "vodka" from private sellers instead of in proper shops.

In the USA, an example is Vidalia onions, and its importance is monumental to a business/industry profits.
The goodwill a business/industry builds around its product/service trade names is the difference between profit and loss. Shareholders by stock often times simply on the basis of perceived good will.
If you want to stir up the caged lion in a Capitalist society; attack their goodwill and trade names. The response will be ferocious.
Poland is very wise to defend its Vodka Goodwill and perceived value in the marketplace. It is not a simple matter of semantics but profits or loss.

I've had much greater dealings with Western Europe and Germany and Belgium than Eastern Europe.
But the area north around Warsaw is THE dominant economic power in Poland. Hey Germany! You OWE us! So give us a BMW and Mercedes plant to show you what the Poles can build.
But Poland is aligned with the wrong auto mfg's right now. Fiat is a loser and going down in flames. Opel? Please; gong down in flames as well.
Poland MUST begin to court German car co's as they are the only ones producing cars worth buying in Europe. VW I believe, assembles diesel engines in Poland, but that's about it.
The government and private enterprise should also invest BIG in their own line of automobiles that can beat Fiat, Renault and Citroen. Forget about competing with German cars. They're just too darn good and advanced.
I like much of Poland's government and leaders. They were very wise to stay out of the socialized mess known as the Euro. Besides, Western Europe should be paying Poland dividends for decades to come. Hell! Why should Germans and Italians be allowed to be Capitalists after WW II and Poland be under FDR's/Stalin's socialist thumb for 45 years?
Yes, I know as a Polack, I 'm supposed to forget about it. But Western Europe owes Poland a lot! Merkel! Open that checkbook! You prospered after WW II and we suffered under FDR's/Stalin's thumb. So pay up!
