Interesting link Jaga. I'd hate to be the weatherman stationed there! From the link which states: This chilly weather is due to the exceptionally high speed of the arctic winds. The katabatic or downward type winds that bring the brisk temperature, travel with speeds up to 200 mph (about 90 m/s) from inland toward the coast of the continent. As one moves toward the higher region inland -- that is, toward the true pole -- the temperature drops from its normal -40 °C to -80 °C. The coldest temperatures usually occur during the winter months of July and August. That is when Antarctica is in its days of darkness. I am going to guess.... higher wind speeds, and possibly Antarctica is more elevated than the Arctic ?

Hey! I guessed one thing right! I won't spoil it for the others. Thanks Charles, Mary Would this be the wind? The more I have read of this place, the more I seem to hate it. Would you ever to emagine, to stand on a piece of that ice, and attempt to fly fish into a constant wind?? Hell, the line would bounce for at the least of 40 beats against my nose, for each lay of line onto water, if actually stay... I do not believe I would ever like that place.. Charles

Hello Mary,
yes, the main reason is the elevation. The average elevation in Antarctica is much higher than in any other continent. Acrtica is just the comglomerate of the glaciers, no land. Thus it is just not that cold there as in the South Pole.
