This was quite the news in Poland, but now it made the international news. They went behind the safety barrier on the cliff in Portugal when they lived. Not sure whether they asked their children to do the pictures or they did the selfie: abcnews.go.com/International/couple-dies-selfies-cliff-edge-portugal/story?id=24935613A Polish couple was killed after they tried to take a selfie on a cliff in Portugal and fell hundreds of feet, Polish Radio reported. The couple fell from the rocky edge of a cliff in Cabo da Raca, Portugal, on Saturday. They would have had to cross a safety barrier in order to reach the cliff edge, the Polish Radio reported. Their young children, ages 5 and 6, were with them and witnessed the accident. They are currently under psychiatric care, according to Polish Radio. A Spanish couple that was also at the location called emergency crews and rescuers tried to recover the bodies using a helicopter, but had to give up because of the rising tide on Saturday. The bodies were recovered on Monday, according to Polish Radio.

Not as fatal, but in the same class is the "rescue" of a 5 year old boy on a mountain side left by his grandfather. The idiot grandfather walked up one side of a rock face expecting the 5 year old to walk up the other side. He was surprised when the boy did not show up.
Original Story: A search is under way for a 5-year-old boy who went missing Monday afternoon on Mount Baldy.
Zachary Gottlieb was hiking at the popular Eagle River mountain when he became separated from his family near the peak, according to the Anchorage Police Department.
He was wearing a black hoody with blue skull graphics, jeans and red tennis shoes.
Update: The boy was found shortly before 5:30 p.m. and is safe.
******
The grandfather should be charged for the cost of the helicopter and searchers that he set in motion to make up for his bad parenting. That is likely $10,000+ in taxpayer cost and several lives he put at risk by neglecting his grandchild.

Terrible incident. I am sorry for the kids. Why did these people took that risk?
I was stupid as a boy, climbing to the top of trees and also standing or running along the edge of the rocky edge of cliffs in the Belgian Ardens mountains. I was an energetic, careless and enthusiastic child, not aware of the dangers back then. But as an adult you have to be responsible and take care of the safety of your kids first.
It's traumatizing for the kids who saw their parents disappear in the front of their eyes. I hope that the kids get good psychiatric care in Portugal, before they return to Poland. Their lives will be changed for ever. I hope that they will get good foster-parents. Hopefully they have kind and patient and human aunts and uncles or maybe grandparents that can take care of them (if their parents were a young couple?)
I hope the best for them and that they will have a bright future in Poland despite that tragic death of their parents. I hope something good will come out of this tragedy.

I also think that people who risk their lives (hikers) should pay for their rescue.

Pieter, kids are kids. We cannot be afraid of everything, life would not make sense then.... It's traumatizing for the kids who saw their parents disappear in the front of their eyes. Polish press was saying that this Polish family was living in Portugal for some time. In Poland we used to disobey the rules since many rules were overly strict... but accidents like that can happen, as you said, to anybody. I hope the kids would recover.

After reading your reply I understand that the Polish family lived in Portugal. Therefor possibly the kids will stay in Portugal. I wish the best for them. Whether they stay in Portugal or go back to Poland. I am sure that they will get looked after well. First because of their age and second, because it got such media attention. Journalist with a human interest will be interested what will happen with the children now. I hope that will manage to protect their privacy and thus keep their identity secret.
