Lost American military choppers drop in on rural Poland fields to ask for directions The Black Hawks and Chinooks landed in Gruta and Nowa Wies in northern Poland as they returned from military exercises in Lithuania. Shocked locals were at first concerned, until they realized it was lost Americans and rushed over to take photos with the crews. Residents of Gruta, in northern Poland, pose for a photo with U.S. troops and their Chinook helicopter on Tuesday.Villagers, at first concerned about the appearance of military choppers, were relieved to learn it was just a bunch of lost Americans. The crews were returning to a temporary base in Miroslawiec, Poland after completing training at the Saber Junction exercises held in Lithuania. Storms and fog forced six choppers to land in Gruta, while six others dropped down in nearby Nowa Wies, Polish army spokesman Lt. Col. Artyr Golawski told the Associated Press. Residents in Gruta forked over English pamphlets about the village so the airmen would know where they were — but left the kielbasa and pierogies at home. These definitely were not US Marine choppers. If they were there would have been pierogi and kielbasa made available.

This almost looks as like a local attraction for the people who live in the area. I bet they saw helicopters before, but not sitting on their fields. Nice and friendly photo

Absolutly incredible in negligence by those pilots responsible. For this is a military flight group even though on exercise and not a training flight, to become lost is not an option. To then ask locals for direction, now then, what kind of military is the Americans operating? If this is the best they have, boy oh boy, we are in trouble big time.
VFR, if these pilots are trained in, which is apparent, is visual flying rules. This allows visibility of 1.5 km in clear weather, plus the ability to see the ground.
IFR, is instrument flying rules controlled through Eurocontrol by centrol flow management unit {CFMU}. This would be the normal switch over when flying through unexpected cloud cover and altimeter readings are too close to ground level.
Normally, the lead pilot as the flight weather conditions change from VFR to IFR, he/she will give the order to following aircraft pilots for the switch over. The flight then will continue under the directions of the navigator.
But to become lost leading a military flight, please now, when is stupidity to become a virtue.

Karl Karl, you are absolutely correct !!! I find this very difficult to believe that they were lost. Something else is afoot. The US Marine Corps would never, ever, allow this to happen. The pilot would be sitting in the brig!!!!

I must also wonder what was up. In these days of GPS navigation this story is hard to believe. I do realize they are military pilots, and as such often have less flying experience than their civilian counterparts.
Kai PS. I would expect Marines (with the exception of the pilots) to gather up some vodka, at the least!

Light a teaspoon of this stuff and it would burn blue until completely gone.
