Hello, I recently was able to obtain my great grandfather's naturalization form. He states he is from "La Rumsa"in Russia. I am unable to find this town on any map or in any Polish histories. The naturalization is dated 1899, so this Polish town was under Russian control at the time. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can find out where this town is/was located? Thank you so much.

Hello, Lisa! I'm sure it must have been transcribed incorrectly, because "La Rumsa" is neither Polish nor Russian. Are there any other documents you have that might have the town name spelled differently?
Unfortunately, this is a common situation that happens with immigration from that time period. The people making the records weren't always very careful in writing down the exact information, and the language barriers must have been formidable.

Lisa,
it almost sounds like "Russia" was misspelled as Rumsa". Do you have this document scanned or any graphic version available to see?

I couldn't figure out how to upload a picture, so I made it my avatar. Thank you for your comments, those were my thoughts but I was hoping I was wrong. All of the other documents I have for him just say "Poland". This was my last hope in finding his hometown. Thank you.

Lisa
I realize you are under a great deal of disappointment with a certain amount of discouragement. If not to disturb you for a my self am not Polish, but perhaps to offer some suggestions that perhaps you have already attempted.
If the front door is closed, then perhaps to try the back door. You know your Grand Fathers last name and family history. Very often the Catholic Church keeps very good birth records, marrage and death as well. Perhaps if to approach one of the church administration with your request, they may be able to connect you to some one to assist you with your search. Records of public notice may well possibly be not available for those times of Russian occupation of the town or village your Grand Father was from. But, as fore mentioned, the church often serves this purpose.
Another door to open, would be the death notice if obtainable by reason of a death certificate. For on the form may be information that would provide clue{s}to the village you are seeking. This may possibly be available through archives kept by the local or state department of public records. Another door of possibilities, is a search at any one of the large public librarys for any papers kept in archive of that year, and date, that may have death notices for public record.
The above is only some suggestions that perhaps you have previously done. I wish you success in your search with the hope and trust you will find what you are looking for.

Thank you Karl. Yes, I have tried all of that. Death certificate says Poland. Local US church says Poland. I do not have a birth record because I do not know where he was born. I appreciate your suggestions.

Lisa,
the resolution is so low. This is probably since.... it is uploaded as your forum small image. Could you please, send me the e-mail with the image to jaga@cableone.net Hope that I would be able to see it. When I opened the current file, I could not really see it since it is only 5k size.

Well Lisa,
The spelling is correct. I have found two other individuals from that location.
First Name: Paul Last Name: Roski Age: 56 Estimated Birth Year: 1864 Place of Birth: Rumsa Poland Russia State: Minnesota County: St Louis
Another one:
Name: Alexandera Maleski Spouse: Stanley Maleski Birth: abt 1867 - Poland Residence: 1935 - Rumsa, Poland Residence: Southampton, Suffolk, New York
We just haven't been able to locate Rumsa, Poland on a partition map yet.
I'll keep trying.
