I love these old busses. Some communistic ideas we will miss: free and universal education, cheap daycares, cheap public transport, everybody employed, job security.

Dear Jaga,
I understand your statement. It comes from your experience in the Peoples Republic of Poland. It is true that not everything was bad in communist Poland. My mother said nearly exactly the same as you. She was sorry that her parents didn't ahd the chance to live in and experience a free and democratic Poland. But she also said that you could live in Poland with the limitations. People had their family lives, their social life, their cultural life, their friends and colleages, their rich spiritual life in and outside the Roman-Catholic church (the community life, the Catholic groups and movements, the Catholic inelligentsia, Catholic teachings, theology studies and Roman-Catholic philosophy), people enjoyed wild life (woods/forests, lakes, the mountains, the parks in the cities), the zoo, sport, cinema, theatre, opera houses, art galeries, musea, café's and restaurants, and they had their jobs and professions like people in the west. The only difference was that you had your planned economy and one party state and we had and have our free market and parliamentarian democracy.
I was to short in Poland and to young back then to be able to judge the situation over there back then (as a child and teenager).
Cheers, Pieter

Just a comment to add: Not all systems of government will fit all situations. Each must meet the situation of specific needs of the people rather be it democratic or Communist or what ever. The primary prerequisite is for the people in: Freedom of choice and protection from abuse.
The primary reason of Government is: To collect taxes, provide services, to then provide and maintain a standing military. All other is subsequent to the event.

Very accurate reply Karl. I agree with you. That is one of the main reasons I became political active in the past, to want part of the public debate about the role of the state and to try to do something about that. I stopped that activity when I found out that I was better in doing that job in journalism (radio and tv).
