German tanks enter Poland in major Nato exerciseBritish Ghurkas attend the multinational Nato exercise Saber Strike in Adazi, Latvia German tanks are rolling into Poland as part of a major Nato exercise as the US mulls over whether to deploy heavy weaponry in eastern Europe. The arrival of German forces in Poland triggered World War II in 1939 but this time their arrival is broadly welcome, as it forms part of Operation Noble Jump. The operation is just part of a much larger exercise, Allied Shield, taking place across the region and which includes US and UK troops including members of the Brigade of Gurkhas. The latest operations come as the New York Times reports the US is considering sending a permanent force of tanks, fighting vehicles and up to 5,000 troops to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and possibly Hungary. A military vessel is seen during a drill at the Khmelevka range on Russia's Baltic Sea in the Kaliningrad Region. Russia, which is also currently conducting large-scale maneuvers within its borders, is claiming the text of the 1997 Founding Act between Nato and Russia prohibits military build-up east of the Elbe River, but Nato says this was never a part of the agreement."There never was any written agreement not to station troops east of the Elbe," Lt Col Paul Kolken of the 1st German-Netherlands Corps told the Sunday Times. "Nato activity in member states is transparent and in accordance with international agreements." Some Western observers are concerned that Moscow may be angered by the move, which comes after Russian's annexation of Crimea and its alleged involvement in the Ukraine conflict. Relations between the West and Russia are at their worst for decades and Dr Helen Caldicott told Russia Today the US and Russia were engaging in a dangerous game of "chicken" over nuclear missiles.

Interesting, of many variations of many facits of complexities. Not only the logistics of fielding by each faction, an armed intrusion on a out of country expedition force, but in conjuction with coordination of operations with other armed forces of the NATO participating military forces.
For one to the other to prevent collision of accompanying forces lead by their repective field commanders in close contact with their respective planning leadership. For if one force becomes confused whilst in process of movement, has the potential of running into another whilst both were fielding on the same or as their respective orders are, the mission objective.
It takes not only the collective organization development by commanding officers for their respective mission objectives to be reached. But coordination of communications and understanding of the different languages of each respective force. Then there is the question of radio traffic and common fequencies to use for enter communication between different national fielded forces. For it is not practical for armoured vehical radio traffic between one participating force to another, for there is the matter of radio discipline that is not exactly universal. For some crews have a tendency to use the air waves as a family telephone on a common neigbour hood line and run off at the mouth with excessive chatter. Thusly clogging up valuable communication, exactly the conditions a enemy would enjoy to have.
Withen the confines of complexity is the varations of fielded communication equipement and armoured vehicles. For there is a mix of Russian designed equipment and West European alike in the same sand box of operation. With this, is the complexity of non-enterchange of spares and maintenance, ammunition enterchangabilty is an issue, for whilst in combat, one armoured vehicle runs short of main gun ammunition, the crews must pull back out of battle for logistics to catch up for reloading. Withen this time, the enemy has gained a clear shot with the unexcusable loss of the armoured vehicle and possibly the crew.
The above only is a small amount of complexity covering this ambitious exercise. Hopefully many lesson will be learnt commensuratly lost in time and change out of personnel in retirements and expirations of military requirements. Then, the whole thing must be repeated once again with old lessons lost and new ones to be learnt by new people.
With the cost and complexity of such a NATO exercise, the only gain is to the ego mindset of the political authority that authorizes such action for their satisfaction and supposed gain on the international mind set of each respective authority.
With above, the ones that will gain will be the respective generals with too many tanks in their inventory, to many bullets in storage and too many solders on their hands, and nothing to do to justifie their existence.

Moscow threat on US weapons: Russia says it will put arms on border if Washington stations tanks in Poland Russia last night warned that it will build up weaponry on the EU's borders if the US stations tanks and heavy arms in Poland. A Moscow defence ministry official called the US plans reported in Washington 'the most aggressive step by the Pentagon and Nato since the Cold War'. General Yuri Yakubov said: 'Russia will have no option but to build up its forces and resources on the western strategic front.' In as far the Russian response, is not a surprise, but an expected response. We have in our little sand box, two of the biggest kids on the block playing blind mans bluff. This as no dandruff off their heads, but for the rest of us, a clear and present endangerment.
As fore mentioned, generals on both sides with too many solders, too many tanks, to many bullets and no wars to justify their existence.

Dear friends,
Seems to be a return to the cold war. Diplomacy, multi-lateral negotiations, UN and OSCE mediation, and bilateral and trilateral talks between countries do not work anymore. Ukraine and Russia aren't on speaking terms, the USA and the Russian Federation aren't on speaking terms and the EU and the Russian Federation aren't on speaking terms either. NATO seems to have moved to the East, and a new kind of Warsaw Pact is growing. An alliance of Russia, China, Syria and Iran. I wonder what side the Chechen leadership will choose on the long term. Ramzan Kadyrov has built his own 'private' militia or army of 90 thousand men. Chechens are fighting in Eastern-Ukraine on the Russian side. Fundamentalist Jihadist Islamist Muslims are fighting on the Ukrainian side. They remember that Ukrainian ultra-nationalist fighters of the Rightwing Sector fought on the Chechen Muslim insergents side during the Chechen wars against the Red army and Russian Spetnaz forces.
You got a point there Karl.
Cheers, Pieter
