Karl, this gold rush might be actually good news for Walbrzych. This part of Poland was in a very difficult situation due to unemployment cased by closing brown coal mines 15 years ago. Maybe this new press would bring more visitors there! But also probably more crime like in Vegas Jaga Thank you for your local and reginal economic description of this area, I was not aware of such a down turn of events with the closure of their coal mines. Usually and I am only guessing, coal mining economies are for the most part, a singular source of income for the local economy and with such closure is paramount to tossing the baby out with the bath water. It is premature at this time, what effect of increased visitor spending will have an effect upon the local economy but at least, it should not hurt. As a person, I do hope with trust this will be the case.. Karl

Waiting for the trainIs one of the last mysteries of the Nazi era about to be solved? The Economist Sep 5th 2015 | WARSAW THE hills surrounding Walbrzych, an old mining town in south-west Poland, have been a hive of activity since two men claimed last month to know the underground whereabouts of a train missing since the second world war. According to legend, the Nazis dispatched it laden with gold from the then-German city of Breslau (now called Wroclaw and in Poland) farther west in the final months of the war. It then apparently vanished near Walbrzych. Locals are used to false alarms. The train has nonetheless become a national matter. Piotr Zuchowski, deputy minister of culture, says he is “over 99% certain” that the train has been found. He is less certain about its contents. They could include military equipment or archives. The train has also stirred up memories of wartime loss and looting. The World Jewish Congress calls for any items stolen from Jews to be returned to their former owners or heirs. If none can be found, the gold should go to other Polish Holocaust survivors, who have “never been adequately compensated”, the congress says. Russia could yet get involved. Some speculate that the train contains the Amber Room, famously stolen by the Nazis from a Russian palace near St Petersburg and last seen in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) during the war. The Russian press is lapping up rumours laden with nationalist longing. “Once we have this train full of gold, we will think about what to do with it,” says Ewa Kopacz, the prime minister. Digging up the train may take months. Meanwhile, Walbrzych is enjoying the attention. A local museum has launched a three-day “golden tour” of the area, costing 1,499 zloty (€350). “We would very much like the finding to be confirmed,” says Anna Zabska, the director. Train or no train, the local tourist board has already struck gold. Explore Walbrzych_

Yes, I do with good hope that this mystery will be solved with discovery as being true. For the finders and owners of property to once again have their property returned after so many years. If the tunnel{s} have stayed dry and cool with out sunshine deteriation, art work should have survived with out harm, that is if the recovery people do not destroy what is there.
There will be much reason to take care in excavation and exploration of the find. For if explosives and munitions are indeed so in storage as most likely, age will make this a ticking time bomb. For military grade dynamite as with common commercial, will separate with nitroglycerin from the containment. With this, if perhaps mines have been placed as rumored, another death trap. It would be speculative, but most likely the mines may not be the underfoot entrapments as would be expected, for it is usually wise for maximum effect, to allude from the obvious to the unexpected. In this manner, it would be better in effect, to use peripheral emplacements with trip wires. This then would have the effect of side blast with better antipersonnel effect for maximum kill. With this would be the blast shock wave to give cause for stored explosives to detonate by funnel effect in the closed in tunnel area.
But of course this is speculation of an unknown fact.

What is clear and present, is not here. Or, as the saying goes: No one is dead until the body is found.

Maybe Poles would be able to dig up the train in relative peace since so many other things are going on in Europe.
