People jumping into icy river in search of a cross.
Maybe they think God will favor them just that little bit more for doing so?

Eric,
yes, you are right, but don't ignore the faith and the tradition. faith gives people the hope.

So if they didn't search for the cross they might be as favored by God? Doing this will somehow bring them good luck?

Speak as you both will, for in time, it is of good trust and hope that God will remember you both at the time of resurrection. For God is never so revered but at the time of death. Karl

Faith and hope are very important parts of human life. Everything in moderation is good, but it is bad in the excess, like ideology.

I think perhaps these young men are simply like young men everywhere...they will take any opportunity presented to compete with one another and enjoy the competition. The Feast of Epiphany merely gives them this opportunity and has probably done so for decades (centuries?). Their belief in God, or lack thereof, probably has little to do with it.

Kai Kai For as not trained in the school of theology, what do I say? Other then to parrot a biblical phase which I would suppose suffice for only the moment. Then it is I would suppose, the intrinsic response to fall back upon..In spite of mans {not gender, but species} intelligence, it appears to be a wonder of Gods ways to him, being us... Our world is our own fault, for we are the masters of our world as it seems to be Gods will for us. And, I would suppose as you have pointed out, we certainly have not been very good at it.. We war with each other, we destroy that what we do not understand, in spite of this, I still hold faith in my fellow man and wish the best to each. This is my personal feelings, but not my professional thinking, each is a separate method of operation. We each have our task in life, and with this, our responsibilities that are attached to it, if we fail to complete our given task,, then some one else will. Karl

Jeanne Jeanne Thank you Jeanne, for how so true and you have placed it very correctly in words. For God provided to us also, his ten commandments for our guidance as a road map for us to follow that is still timeless. Speaking only for my self, twice daily, I put aside what ever I do, and humble my self to pray. Formally in far past, I only did this once a day, but for a time,, I was not sure I would survive the day, so as a guarantee to do so, my prayers were both morning and night to cover for sure my daily prayer. The uncertainty of life some times provides us a solution to a possible event we have no to little control of.. Karl
