Poland chosen to join UN Security Council
02.06.2017 18:31 Poland has been chosen as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2018-2019 in a vote on Friday. The vote took place in New York on Friday. Photo: MSZ Poland received 190 votes to join the Council during the ballot in New York. Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said the event "marks a great victory for Polish diplomacy, and a major foreign policy success.” “It’s proof that a foreign policy aimed at empowerment is bearing fruit. We are starting to act globally, we are not afraid of serious challenges,” he added. Participation in the UN Security Council election was the high point of the foreign minister’s visit to New York. Poland has been engaged in a flurry of efforts in recent months to secure support for its bid for a seat at the table in 2018 and 2019. The UN Security Council consists of five veto-wielding permanent members (China, France, Russia, the UK and US), and 10 non-permanent members elected by the organisation’s General Assembly for a term of two years. One non-permanent place goes to a country from Eastern Europe. From the latter group, Bulgaria put itself forward as a candidate as well as Poland, but withdrew in December 2016. This is the sixth time Poland has been elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. “Such a good result is a testament to the recognition of Poland’s contribution to maintaining international peace and security, and to the trust which the international community places in our country,” the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement.

John, we will see how Poland would vote. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately we don't have a power of permanent UN member.
It is strange how little I hear about UN actions since I live in the US. Europeans treat the UN much more seriously, in the US it is treated as one of many bureaucratic organizations.
I wonder how Pieter and Karl see the UN. Did its role diminished during the last 10-20 years?

Europeans treat the UN much more seriously, in the US it is treated as one of many bureaucratic organizations. I wonder how Pieter and Karl see the UN. Did its role diminished during the last 10-20 years? Jaga One reason perhaps The UN is not so readily recognized in todays news, is it is out shined by NATO with issues occuring on the home grounds in Europe. The UN has an important role in 3rd world affairs, but over the years, has not changed in concept, for to days world is no longer 1945. In as far as German contribution, it is contribution with primarily logistics support with minimum Bundeswehr troop deployment. For one thing, there is reluctance of the public to see export of German military power, the memories of the last war still are valid today with,"Never Again". With this, is the currant past to present degrading of equipment with shortage of spars and replacement. The news will say one thing, but reality is the bottom line. If a shooting war was to begin today, Germany would be in a hard spot after the first two weeks. www.gppi.net/publications/peace-security/article/german-return-to-un-peacekeeping/Karl
