Kai,
I agree with you that the Beatles are just one of the many groups in their time. There were and are a lot of good other bands too. Maybe we share some musical taste. I am quite ecclectic in my musical taste, but due to business and lack of time I often don't have the patience or rest to listen to a lot of music. But music is important to me. Good music satisfies the soul. Good music gives you a moment of peace or contemplation. I can enjoy a lot of different kinds of music, from classical European to pop music, to ethnic world music to religious music.
Country, western, hillbilly and blues, and classical jazz are also in my collection. I particularly liked Woody Guthrie, Jannis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, but also Elvis Presley, Joni Mitchell, the Doors, the Greatfull Dead, Mc5, the New York Dolls, the funny The Ramones, Iggy and the Stooges (with songs like 'I wanno be your dog"), Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Donna Sunmer, Diana Ross, next to European bands like David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Roxy Music, The Police, the Sex Pistols, Joy Division, Human Leage, the Simple Minds, Rod Steward, the Eurythmics (Annie Lennox), Abba and PJ Harvey. Old School American jazz and blues accompanies me through my life. My parents put it on the radio when we drove at night from Zeeland to our holiday house in the Ardennes mountains (that was a french Belgian radio station or some old audio cassette with Oscar Peterson or Erroll Garner). I like Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis and many other American jazz musicians. I prefer old school American jazz above modern European jazz. (Nou doubt you have some good European jazz too. I heard very good Polish and Czech jazz in Crakow and Prague).
I am also from the electronic generation and therefor was fascinated by Kraftwerk, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Detroit-, German- and British techno. And there it maybe stopped. I am open to modern dance, new bands and influences, but haven't heard much innovation or new stuf since the nineties.
I listen to quite progressive music stations (American and British) and I can tell you good music is made today too. All kind of music is around for every taste and that is good and you could nearly say democratic. Like different political parties and ideologies you have different kinds of music styles that fits different kind of people.
Cheers,
Pieter
