An older friend of mine who was part of the long haired Amsterdam (Hippy style) music community of the sixties admitted that the Netherlands had great bands, but that the chauvinistic or underground youth loved (preferred) foreign British and American bands. The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who, that kind of stuf. It was the same in my time during the eighties. My taste was based of British and American pop and rock music, soul & disco, New Wave, Hard rock and some singers. Some english language Dutch bands (See Herman Brood, the Golden Earring and Vitesse above here) merged with the British and American bands in my taste. It was english language music.I wasn't particulary fond of Dutch language music and still am not very fond of it. English, German, French and Italian are more suitable languages for songs.

This song shows the excitement and changing times of the eighties. It has a typical eighties sound. It is different from seventies music.

Pieter, Karl,
I love 80s. My electronic radio is adjusted to 80s. Karl, I like the "Capitan of the Hearts" also, but two last songs sound like from 50s. I was not familiar with them, but cute, in German.

I must confess, these are familiar for the reason we listioned to them on the BBC and American military radio broadcast on our battery radio in Denmark. I do not at the moment remember the frequency on our radio we recieved, we had to be careful not to use up the battery too much quick at the time. Karl

Karl,
I am a child of the seventies and eighties. The eighties will be my teenage years for ever. I was 10 in 1980 and 20 in 1990. Eighties music has as much an impact on my life as sixties and seventies music. Eighties music was exciting, fresh and new, because year after years new bands emerged and with them new albums, singles, ep's, 12 inches, long play records, cassette tapes (Compact Cassettes, audio cassette, or simply tape or cassette) and half way the eighties the compact disc, audio cd's entered our lives.
I collected singles of eighties hits of the Dutch top 40 during some years. Only the ones I liked and which suited my musical taste back then. Next to that I recorded a lot of songs from the radio via my cassette deck. I had a collection of cassette tapes with my own kind of music, from my favorite music radio programs. The eighties was the time of pop music, disco, rock, romantic pop songs, heavy metal, the development of hip hop, electronic music, dance music and new wave.
The 1980s are commonly remembered for an increase in the use of digital recording, associated with the usage of synthesisers, with synth-pop music and other electronic genres featuring non-traditional instruments increasing in popularity. Also during this decade, several major electronic genres were developed, including electro, techno, house, freestyle and Eurodance, rising in prominence during the 1990s and beyond. Throughout the decade, R&B, hip hop and urban genres were becoming commonplace, particularly in the inner-city areas of large, metropolitan cities; rap was especially successful in the latter part of the decade, with the advent of the golden age of hip hop. These urban genres—particularly rap and hip hop—would continue their rise in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s.
Cheers, Pieter
