Hi folks,
Been swimming at Moody and Wells Beaches in Maine last week and this. Got my lifetime Access Pass and will be heading up to Arcadia National Park.
Have to order some shirts and would like to know if 6.5 oz denim shirts would be more rugged than 5.7 oz canvas shirts.
Advantage of one over the other if any. These, of course, would be 100% cotton.
Any opinions would be appreciated.

For what it is worth - the Denim after a couple of washes will be softer - the canvas will either be stiff or have no body at all. Then again, it really does depend on the manufacturer - a quality manufacturer will give you a better fit and feel than a cheaper one - so I would consider that as well.

JJ I can tell you but then I will have to (you know) LOL just kidding.
Here is a thought.. call or go to a fabric store. They should be able to help you. (Jo-Ann's or a sewing center where they sell fabric) Also be careful with Denim. Depends who is selling it. I once bought a denim skirt from a catalog and it was not the denim I expected and was use to but I think I would go with the denim. LL Bean, Land's End and Eddie Bauer are good to get some advice from also. Is th canvas the material that is tan and they go on safarie trips dressed in it. Tha tmight be a choice also as they are rugged but cool. (which is what they are made for I think)
What about denim chambray. Try the Gap too!!!
PS: I thought denim was cotton too.

J.J.
I think perhaps the ladies have given you the best advice, reason: They know best from experience.
My reason of contribution, is only of a practical nature. For in past and present as contributed to fabrik and use.
As you have stated the conditions of use, in regard to the garment as being {shirt} for beach wear, you are fortunate to have at your access, a great many number of choices provided by the various manufacturers.
There are with these choices, some basic needs of information of fabric construction. I will not bore you with {Processes and materials of manufacture} but, will stick to the practical.
Denim as previously suggested is an excellent choice of basic all cotton garment use. But, not all materials of manufacture are the same. Although, the quality is becoming much better through use of better materials.
There are though, several different type of cotton fiber. You really should know this.....
The common short fiber {cotton} is cheaper of purchase, works very well in the finished product, wears reasonably well, but, after a short period of wear, will wrinkle.
Egyptian Cotton: is a high quality, long fiber material, a higher cost in whole sale price. But, the finished products are very durable, long wearing and resist wrinkling very well.
The composite fabrik: Cotton/wool-Cotton/poloy mix-wear well, easy maintenance with high strength.
{As a personal nature: My old military {Bund} uniforms were primarily of Cotton/polyester 80/20 % mix for summer/fall, whilst my winter {as Issued} was for dress {wool/Poly mix}combat was similar mix with some all wool.}
There is a basic difference in manufacture between Denim and Canvass {sail cloth}. The advantages of either, is of the intended use. For both are an excellent material.
For your use: My self, I would tend to suggest the denim as the base fabric of choice. I would highly suggest to insist upon the material manufacture to be of {Egyptian long fiber Cotton} as it will be easy maintenance and much more satisfactory for beach and wind blown use. In as much to weights, try them on of each, for which ever is the more comfortable for to wear. Read the manufacture material and use label. For it will describe the materials used in manufacture and the care instructions will give a good indication of wrinkle resistance.
If you do not care for the brightness of the colour blue in denim, be careful, but this may be lessened by a cold machine wash in bleach. Just insure the tub is full first.
My suggestion though, would be to purchase the colour of your choice and let the process of manufacture provide with the finished product rather your desire for fade or no fad.

JJ .............are any of these towns near you. They have a TJ Maxx and I suggest you go there for your swim wear. They usually have a nice selection of men's clothes. It is a designer discount store and the prices are great . Since its the end of the season you should find some good sales. Or try Bon-Tons or JC Penney's also. When shopping for shirt for the beach what you want is something comfortable, light weight, wears well and dries fast.

Manchester, NH Nashua, NH Concord, NH Derry, NH Salem, NH Dover, NH Merrimack, NH Hudson , NH Keene, NH Londonderry, NH Rochester, NH Portsmouth, NH Bedford, NH Goffstown, NH Laconia, NH They are all near me. Within an hours drive in NH is very near. What I was looking for is that LL Bean has canvas shirts and Twin Rivers has denim shirts and I just don't know the advantage of one over the other. Maybe it's a mute point but I have to check it out. Need to get some embroidery done on them also.

Not familiar with Twin Rivers but I checked LL Bean site and they have a sun washed canvas shirt that they say is broken in. I like the style and I think this would be a nice one if you chose it. (two patch pocket style) You can layer this one over a t-shirt. I think the only difference is preference as far as comparing. I think they are both similar but then you have to be there and see and feel both to know for sure but this is what I am feeling from what I have pulled up. Bottom line is go with your gut and what you like the best otherwise it will sit in the closet . Good Luck and keep us posted ;D Enjoy the the Park..

JJ, You might want to check out Land's End as well - I know they have a division that does the embrodiery stuff - if you give them a call they will be able to tell you about fabric choices - I had to get shirts for a group awhile back and they were most helpful ( a little pricey but everyone was very HAPPY with the product).
