I do remember well these M4 machines from my time whilst fulfilling my required wehrdienst in year 1958. I was just 18 of years at that time and after first training, was assigned to a Panzer training centre {Ausbildungszentrum panzertruppenschule-Münster}. In our studies were also of the past American M4 tank. A great deal has been described of the faults of that machine, but not enough of the strengths built in to it. For it was simple construction, excellent power to weight ratio, and very easy to maintain.
We were assigned the American M47 and of course the difference between it and the M4 was as to light and day. But,,it needs be remembered, the strength of such weapons is the training of the crew in correct use and deployment of the weapons used. And the M4 was no exception in our eyes at that time although we never used them, only viewed them as weapons of the last war.
And yes, I have viewed the film {Fury} and was a bit dismayed by the glaring faults displayed by Holly-Wood, but it was for entertainment and not an accurate war film.
