It is still fairly common to see aircooled VW beetles on Mexican road ways, they just run and run. Now though, with its replacement water cooled design, once again, time has run out on the name, beetle.

Pieter
Interesting video history of the VW/KDF Wagen. It would so appear that the British unintentually saved VW during the war and after. If the British bombers had hit the main power plant, that would have ended VW, but they missed and hit the canal behind it. And, since after the war, the Brits needed a facility such as the factury for rebuilding the engines for their vehicles, they cleaned up the factury to do so.
The VW is a rolling history of the rebuilding of post war Germany and best of all, to keep it out of the hands of the French, for after their inspection of such a ugly little car, they turned down all interest in it to leave it back to the Germans.
Some years past, my self was to inspect one of the post war VW/KDF and it was not a wonder. For the gear howl could be heard two Km before seeing it. The enterier was extremly plain and unappealing in as well as very spartan as well. The gear howl was cured with the installation of British made Ryder gear cobbing machines that machined the gear sets accurately.

Karl,
thanks for a reminder where beetles come from (Pueblo mexico)
Pieter,
good reminder. I had a friend in Germany and he was driving a white beetle that he liked, for me this was not a car of my dreams. But beetles, which are called bugs in the US are very popular among geeks. Ela, my daughter and other children were counting them on the road. They also had some cute features - like special lights in the shape of hearts or interesting colors to make them unique.
