this story is related to Idaho: mentalfloss.com/article/58983/15-things-you-might-not-know-about-idahoFirefighters call this axe-like tool a Pulaski, after the Idahoan forest ranger who popularized it. Edward Pulaski was a hero of the Great Idaho Fire of 1910, which spanned three million acres, killed 87 people, and remains the largest wildfire in U.S. history. He led 45 firefighters to an abandoned prospect mine and fought off the flames at its mouth until he passed out, saving all but five men. A year after the disaster, Pulaski combined an axe and an adze to create the perfect tool for building firebreaks.

I just put a new handle on my Pulaski. I believe my neighbors gave it to me back in the '70s, and then when I moved into a condominium in 2010 I passed it on to friends. Within 6 months I found I couldn't live without it - it is such a versatile tool. So I borrowed it back and keep it locked in my storage area between uses. If it were not locked up it would surely disappear in the hands of someone who believes they need it more than I need it!

Good heavens, so this is a Pulaski, it looks dangerous... It looks, and if all would excuse me for saying so, an excellent weapon the Vikings could have placed in to use.
Although in reference to the description and photo kindly provided by Jaga and Kai, the tool would be handy for fighting fires such as clearing a trail through brush and what ever.

It does look dangerous but it is also useful for many tasks. I am glad that Kai found it useful in his own household

Jaga
Thank you for presenting the history of the Pulaski implement. It was both educational and interesting of the inventor Edward Pulaski {Ranger Pulaski} and his invention.
