Elections in Eastern Germany: Far right on the march?
Eastern Germans are going to the polls, and the country is asking itself: will the far-right populist AfD win? Will that make the states of Saxony and Brandenburg ungovernable? Guests: Valerie Höhne (Spiegel Online), Michaela Küfner (DW), Alan Posener (Die Welt)
Interesting enough, it is still pure speculation as of out come of the reginal elections. One thing is for sure though, the AfD has not been sitting around on their thumbs, this for sure. One thing is for sure though, the AfD has been gaining power and are not afraid to use it.
Yes, they are gaining power, but like other parties they have their internal struggles, discord and party wings which might cause some loss of votes.
Even that won't stop them from victory if they will be able to regroup themselves and manage to stop the influence of the extreme right völkisch-nationalist party wings 'Der Flügel' and the Patriotische Plattform e.V. (PP).
Höcke regularly serves as main speaker for nationalist rallies organized by party organizations of the AfD.
Der Flügel (The wing) is classified as Volkisch (Folkist) and nationalist grouping within the alternative for Germany. He was classified in January 2019 by the constitutional protection as a suspected case for right-wing extremist aspirations, since the "propagated policy concept [...] on exclusion, contempt and far-reaching illegality of foreigners, migrants, especially Muslims, and politically dissenters addressed. The leadership ties in the estimation of extremism researchers deliberately to the right-wing extremist and National Socialist linguistic usage. The wing is considered a reservoir of radical forces within the party and as a house power of the Thuringian AfD chairman Björn Höcke.
There is a lot of overlap with the Patriotic Platform.
The Patriotic Platform e.V. (PP) is an association of members of the folk-nationalist right wing of the Alternative Party for Germany (AfD). It was headed by the Saxony-Anhalt member of parliament Hans-Thomas Tillschneider.
In September 2018, the association's board requested the self-dissolution of the association.
