Pieter
How well do my self remember the songs of Vera Lynn. When tuning in The BBC, her songs we listioned with a close ear but was careful for the radio batteries to not run them down too quick for we had no electricity until later years.
It was her singing that set for the remainder of my life, my musical taste.

Bei Mir Bist Du Shein
Of all the boys I've known, and I've known some Until I first met you, I was lonesome And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light And this old world seemed new to me
You're really swell, I have to admit you Deserve expressions that really fit you And so I've racked my brain, hoping to explain All the things that you do to me
Bei mir bist do schön, please let me explain Bei mir bist do schön means you're grand Bei mir bist do schön, again I'll explain It means you're the fairest in the land
I could say Bella, bella, even sehr wünderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I've tried to explain, bei mir bist do schön So kiss me and say you understand
Bei mir bist do schön, you've heard it all before but let me try to explain Bei mir bist do schön means that you're grand Bei mir bist do schön, it's such an old refrain
and yet I should explain It means I am begging for your hand I could say bella, bella, even sehr wünderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I could say bella, bella, even sehr wünderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I've tried to explain, bei mir bist do schön So kiss me and say that you will understand

I like the fashion of 40s, but I am a bit burned of Jewish and old war subjects. I wish we could focus more on how to understand the current situation in the world rather.

Jaga,
We could and should learn from the past wars and history to not repeat old mistakes. The lack of historical knowledge and bagatelle of part of our younger generations is worrisome. I see in their behaviour, voting pattern, consumerism and addictions that they lack some historical awareness and general knowledge. I agree with you that we could focus more on how to understand the current situation in the world. I hope we do and I think we do, but we have all limited time to express it on the Forum.
Cheers, Pieter

Vera Lynn is a heroine to old Brits, continental Europeans who were liberated, and it is true that Dutch, Belgian, Luxemburg, French, Danish and probably German people to listened to her songs after the war.
She is from your and my parents generations. I understand her influence on your musical taste. She still lives and was a good singer.Cheers, Pieter

Pieter,
You are correct in worrying about the lack of historical knowledge among our youth. As the saying goes, the lack of history gives you the chance of repeating it.
Marlene Dietrich version of Lili Marleen is the better one. Nothing wrong with singing the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic'. An old favorite.
