Do you see the Turkish girls walking in short dresses at . They look like Western-European, American or Israeli girls. I know Turkish and Kurd women like that in the Netherlands. Secular, Humanist, atheist, non-religious, or liberal Alevi, moderate Sunni Muslim or secular conservative or secular liberal women. Social democratic, socialist, Marxist and Kemalist (Turkish secular nationalist) women and girls. You often have the impression in the USA that all Turks and Moroccans are conservative, puritinical or fundamentalist Sunni Muslim people. They aren't the fanatics we sometimes see them.
I know quite a few very secular, very progressive, very humanist, feminist, social democratic, liberal conservative and moderate conservative Turks who are associated with the Green Left, Socialist Party, Labour Party, conservative liberal VVD party of prime minister Mark Rutte and even the social conservative and center right Christian Democratic CDA.

Pieter, it is getting better but not fast enough. In big cities in Turkey you can see women dressed in european way, but what about arab countries like Qatar or Saudi Arabia - women are in higab, isolated at home. I know educated and independent women from Egypt and India, but they have to pay in other ways for their independence (not having family, immigration). Dear Jaga,
You are right. Fact is that in most parts of the world the situation of women is far from good. The situation of women is bad in India, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle east, Bangladesh, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, the Arab world, Iran, Africa, Southern-America and in the less developed area's of the European continent, Northern-America and the Caucasus and the Ural, mainland Russia (Eurasia) and Australia ( www.whiteribbon.org.au/understand-domestic-violence/facts-violence-women/domestic-violence-statistics/ ). But in our own Western European, Central-European American and Canadian territories domestic violence, verbal and physical abuse, incest, rape and the humiliation of girls and women at schools, workplaces, public spaces and at home also still takes place.
In Orthodox, strict, Muslim migrant communities and families honour killings take place. In native European families there are still psychopathic, psychotic, egocentric, narcissistic and sadistic fathers, uncles, brothers (sons), neighbours who terrorise, abuse, beat, attack, harass and murder or wound and maim women. Jealousy, dominance, mental disorders, wrong kind of personalities, macho behaviour, exploded ego's, clan and tribal group mentalities, selfishness, anti-social behaviour and criminal behaviour are the causes of these women's suffering. Women who could be your mother, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, nice neighbour, your colleague, your female doctor, dentist, seminar/workshop coach, sport/gyn instructor, nurse, secretary, local shop counter girl, post woman, local councillor, the waitress of your local restaurant, a police officer (who is abused at home by her husband), your hairdresser or your girlfriend or your masseuse.
Let's look at a country in the world, let's say the Philippines. Today, violence against women remains to be one of the most persistent and alarming issues that the Philippines has faced.
According to a survey conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in 2008, one in every five Filipino women aged 15 to 49 has experienced violence. When the NSO conducted the 2008 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), the survey introduced different types of violence that were done to women or experienced by Filipino women at least once their lives. The types of violence that were indicated were: physical violence, sexual violence, physical violence during pregnancy, and spousal violence.
The situation for women and girls in the Muslim Arab countries in the Middle east, Northern-Africa and East-Africa is not good. Women in Egypt , Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Bahrain, Lebanon, Mauritania, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libiya, the Palestinian territories, the Israeli Arab communities, Djibouti, the Comoros and Somalia have a hard life under strict control, fundamentalist Islamist rules, family clan patriarch's and abusive fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins and other male family members of the same family clan. Extreme family and community control limits the lives of women and girls. To many women and girls still are killed or maimed for life (acid attacks) due to these primitive honour codes and the practice of these honour killings.
In the West anonymous preditors walk, drive and hang around chasing local girls in bars, discotheques, dancings, shopping malls, on the street and in parks. Murderers, serial killers, rapists, pedophiles who chose little girls at kindergartens or primary schools and teenage girls at highschools, girls clubs or when girls are walking or cycling solo or waiting for a bus, car of their parents to pick them up or cabs who can carry them home.
This world is still not a safe place for women and girls.

Jaga,
I am surprised that Jordan is on this list of the 10 Worst Countries for Gender Equality, Ranked by Perception. But not surprised by the 9 other ones. Maybe the fact that most native Jordanian citizens are traditional Orthodox Sunni Muslim Bedouins and that the other Jordanians are conservative Palestinian Sunni Muslims who moved to Jordan from Gaza, Israel and the Westbank after the many Israeli-Arab wars.
Queen Rania of Jordan (31 August 1970) was born in Kuwait to a Palestinian family, she later moved to Jordan for work, where she met the then prince Abdullah. Since marrying the now King of Jordan in 1993, she has become known for her advocacy work related to education, health, community empowerment, youth, cross-cultural dialogue and micro-finance. She is also an avid user of social media and she maintains pages on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. She has two daughters and two sons and has been awarded various decorations by governments.Cheers, Pieter
