Does an "X" next to a person's name in the ship's manifest mean that person died somewhee along the way?
Thanks, GM

GM, Manifests from Ellis Island often include a number of annotations. An "X" in the left-hand column was one of several ways of indicating that the passenger was either temporarily detained or held for special inquiry at Ellis Island. Explanations for other notations can be found here: www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/
