It was a powerful, emotional experience for me to discover the villages where my grandparents were born, and more importantly, my living family in Poland. I hope that through discussions here I can help you to do the same.
There are certainly others more knowledgeable than I about all the resources now available, but I am good at figuring out how to find the resources!

I look forward to posting here when I'm able to start geneaology research on the Polish line in my family. Unfortunately, we have very little to go on right now. I've been bugging my mother to collect whatever information she has to give to me so I can start.
My mother's mother was Hungarian-Polish and for some reason, the Hungarian side is fairly well-documented, but we know nothing about the Polish side, only her Polish maiden name (which may not even have retained its original spelling - I think it's a "Hungarified" spelling of a Polish name).

Susan,
thank you for your posts and for your concerns. I hope you would be able to find out more about your Polish roots. What was your mother maiden name?

Hi Jaga, My grandmother's maiden name that I would like to research is "Lachovits," but like I said, I think this is a Hungarified spelling. I would assume the "real" spelling of this name would be "Lachowicz." My grandmother was born in Eperjes, Hungary and as far as I know, her mother was Hungarian, but her father was Polish. But I don't know anything about him, not even his name or where he was from. There is some info written down but not organized well and my mom remembers bits and pieces of family info that my grandmother told her, but that is not yet written down. My parents are visiting me for Christmas and I've told my mom all I want for a Christmas present is to get this information recorded so I can start researching!

Suzannem,
If nothing else, have a tape recorder handy and get your Mother talking! And collect each and every possible document, letter, photograph, etc that you possibly can. Even the documentation of the Hungarian side will help.
we'll help all we can.

Thank you, Nancy. The tape recorder is a good idea. I am going to start a file with copies any documents, etc. that we may have. I also made up an "interview form" for my mom, so I remember what to ask her to get definitive dates, proper spellings, etc. for further research.

Suzanne,
Sometimes people get intimidated by forms, maybe she will remember more if you ask for stories ...

Jim, Thanks for the link. I didn't know they had actual microfilmed records, but I will check that out.

Nancy, That's a good point, but I actually wasn't thinking of giving my mom the form to complete. Instead, I just made it up so that I can remember what I want to ask her. It helped clarify for me where there are "holes" in our family information, to help guide me. Unfortunately, there are a lot of holes at this point....

Suzanne, I'm not positive they have Hungarian records but you should check. They do have many of the Polish records from both Civil and Church records. And if you need Jewish informaiton go to www.jewishgen.org

Jim, Thanks, I'll check out the LDS site when I have more Polish info to go on. So far it returned no results for any of the info I put in re: Hungarian family members.
I don't have any Jewish background (that I know of), but if the Jewishgen website is helpful for Eastern European ancestry searches, that may be a good place to visit as well.

The jewish.gen site is excellent, whether or not you have Jewish ancestry. The shetlseeker function is really terrific for finding villages, and many villages have extra information about life there in the 1800s. Well worth a visit.
