Did you have a chance to watch History channel revcently? They had a program about salt mines and coal mines, they talked quite a lot about Wieliczka - its history, probably for at least a half of the hour. They talk about parts of Wieliczka which are not really seen for a visitor because of the danger that they may be buried - some unusual shapes of salt found there and also about a history of the mine. www.historychannel.com/modernmarvels/?page=archiveBy the way, we have also a couple of articles about Wieliczka: Visit to Wieliczka Salt Mine - part I culture.polishsite.us/articles/art264.htmlmy husband watched it briefly in the morning and he woke me up so that I would also hear Kinga legend on american TV: St. Kinga - Patron of Salt Miners culture.polishsite.us/articles/art239.html

I visited th Wieliczka mines on July24 this year. What an amazing place. Wished I had seen the episode on History Channel. Took plenty of pics, but not with a great deal of success. Needed to use time exposures, but had no tripod.

Jim Could you get me details of the Wieliczka cassette you mention. I would like to obtain one if they will accept my credit card across the 'big pond'. I love Wieliczka and visit it every time I am in Krakow. Hope you can help Leslie

Hi Piwo (you make me thirsty!) I too did not have much luck with my first set of photos down the mine: tended to be too dark to do much with. The walls and often the size of the place try to defeat flash and often succeed! You can see some of the photos I have taken at community.webshots.com/user/ellray100. Good shooting next time Leslie

Hi Leslie, No wrong time to pop a cold one.... I'll look forward to viewing your album! As I try this morning, I keep getting an "album unavailable at this time" message, and to "try back later". I'll do so throughout the day. I will dig through my shots and see if any are worth sharing: it's embarrassing to share bad photo's. But on a lighter note, I'll share a little story on our trip to Wieliczka if it's not too large a departure: We left Warszawa in the morning (we were staying about a 4 minute walk from the Uprising Monument), and promptly couldn't find our way out of town. Our map had only names of streets, but the signs only showed numbers. And the map didn't have all the roads.. It took over an hour just to get on the road (7 I think it was). Asked for directions like 6 times, and then when in Krakow, we had the same issue. We must have drove around the city 5 times, frustrated beyond rationale thought. Found the street sign to Wieliczka town, and stopped at a sklep and asked for directions. My daughter enjoyed listening to me recite my little "I only speak and understand a little polish" routine, then ask for help, and she ran into the sklep with me. It was going badly: I just didn't understand what the lady was saying and my daughter ran back to get the dictionary. In the meantime, a security guard looking fellow walks up, and points out something to her, and she proceeds to dumb it down a bit, and the light goes on. I have it. We thank them profusely and run out the door (day is getting late by now). I drop the dictionary, pick it up and jump into the car, which has the door already open. Problem is, I jumped into someone else's car. The guy in the passenger side was eating a sandwich, and his eye's got the size of tomatoes, but his mouth was full of food. My daughter and cousin were laughing so hard they nearly soiled themselves, I was 15 shades of red, and there's still a guy in Poland who is telling this story about the crazy American every chance he gets ;D Well, maybe you had to be there......... I wanted desperately to tell my Polish family this story, but just didn't have the words to do so accurately....

Jaga,
When I think it was Suzanne mentioned she saw it on TV I went to the History channel to see if it would be rebroadcast and they had this DVD listed. I notice it does not specifically mention Wieliczka so I would call them and make sure it's on the DVD.
