There were several instances that Poles - because of their fame (like Copernicus) or because of their exploration skills - like Strzelecki and Kosciuszko mountain: www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=11624made other Poles famous what about Poles and Siberia? Anybody can give the example of the Polish names there? What about some mountains?

Now a bit about Kosciuszko mountain and its difficult spelling Mount Kosciuszko (nicknamed "Kozzy" by the notoriously informal Ozzies) is the highest mountain on the flattest and smallest continent. A thoroughly uninspiring peak, Kosciuszko gets a lot of abuse, ... The peak was named in 1840 by Polish-Australian explorer Paul Strzelecki for Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746-1817), the Polish military hero who fought in both the American and Polish wars of independence. To Strzelecki, the peak resembled the tomb of Kosciuszko in Krakow, Poland. Some think he had climbed Mount Townshend and thought it was the highest. There is some recent controversy over the spelling of this peak. Until the late 1990s, it was spelled Kosciusko, the long-standing English-language spelling of the Polish patriot's name. However, there has been a movement lately to add the extra "z" to his name to more accurately reflect the Polish spelling, not just in Australia, but in the USA as well (for example, the "Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial" in Philadelphia). Note that a true rendition of the Polish name would have an acute accent over the first "s". And he was born Tadevush Kastsyushka in Belarus, and a true rendition of that name would, I believe, require the Cyrillic alphabet. An editorial: Even though the governments in Australia are firmly behind the new spelling, to me it seems kind of silly. Like speakers of any other language, English speakers should have the right to make subtle changes to proper names to fit their linguistic and orthographic conventions. In English, the capital of Poland is Warsaw, not Warszawa; the explorer is named Columbus, not Colombo or Colón. I personally don't see much need to add a "z" to Koscuiszko's name, since it will have no effect on the usual English pronounciation. www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=11624

See, now I figured Ozzies were followers of that crazy singer Ozzie Osborne. Otzie is that frozen fellow who spent 5,000 years in the glacier on the Austrian-italian border, and Aussies are those people from down under who stand on their heads! Not to be confused with the Kiwis who are 1,500 miles to the east. Kai

Franek, Kai and Rdy: The mountain of which Jaga speaks is in Australia, and the article she gave a link to used the word "Ozzies" to refer to Australians. Australia is also known as the "Land of Oz" or just plain "Oz" to the natives. So there. ;D ;D ;D

Nancy Oh dear! The 'Land of Oz' is where the little girl who met the Straw Man and so on went to see the Wizard - it has nothing to do with Aussie land!! And they don't call themselves Ozzies or even Aussies - when they greet each other it is 'Cobber'. You're going to have to be nicer to the members of the forum, particularly Frank - otherwise the Polish members and I will have to come over to 'Yankland' and see to you!!!! I really like you very much, even though it doesn't show!! Lovable Leslie

Jaga Czesc! Wasn't there a discussion on the forum (it might have been on Bella) in which somebody showed that Copernicus (Kopernik) was in fact not Polish - can't remember what race he was though (we in England don't claim he was English though!). I must be in a funny mood this evening - I've just had a go at Nancy and now you!!!! I really am a nice person - so my two ex-wives said!!! Leslie

In English, the capital of Poland is Warsaw, not Warszawa; . Just another dig at you Jaga!!!! It depends to whom you speak in England - If you asked me, for example, I would write Warszawa and Krakow, and I'm English!! And Wroclaw, not Breslau! Do not generalise!! I do not think all Americans are money boasters, loud talkers, warmongers etc etc etc!!!!! Leslie (Oh I am in a mood tongight!!!!)

Leslie; Two wives,WOW! I have been married to the same woman for sixty years.. There have been times when she made the statemen..But way deep down I know she loves me (I THINK) As for Nancy, I love when I upset her. I love the way that she comes back at me. She loves to stomp me unto the ground, then put her foot on me beating her chest like Tarzan.. But no matter she is #1 in my book. But it is getting tougher all the time. Now we have RDY (Krysia)) to contend with. And then there is JAGA Geeze. Would'nt it be wonderful if we all lived closer .We could have a Polish hoedown. I would love to the Polka Hop with Nancy. The Oberek with RDY, nd waltz all over the place with Jaga Oh wishful thinking (SIGH)
