Here in New Hampshire we call it 'a case of cabin fever.' Hard to get over but it can be done. head directly to your favorite pub and get the vodka bottle with the sunshine logo on it and proceed to medicate your symptons. J.J. You have the right idea! My wife will not let me enter into a pub (probably figures it is for public safety) but, she complains only just a little if the vodka or gin or beer or wine is at home. Charles

The winter melancholy has started with me this year, a dark, wet and cold winterstart! Snow is less bad than this continuous cold rain, blowing wind, and dark weather! Pieter I am very sorry for you! I realize this time year is difficult for some. My wife suffers of the same. Speaking only for my self. I do enjoy the seasons of 4. The spring is of new life-new grass/new leaves of the tree/new insects and the beginning of the warmth of the sun and breeze. The summer of warmth/sunshine into the fall. The winter: it is special. The storms begin/the rain has begin and the darkness with the rain shadow with it. The storm creates in self, the feeling of life for the world is alive now, the wind carries with it, the breath of life into the body as it tries to remove your warmth. The see speaks with a strong voice, for it caresses you with the salt of spray, for it loves you with its breath, and entertains you with the birds of the air that flight just above the wave with their dipping of wing tips. The see is the mother of all things. For she gives and she takes with out mercy. But when she loves you, life becomes a gift. Charles

Charles Pieter, If it's good cheer you want, proceed to New Hampshire and we will cheer you up. That is, if we have not been confined by then ourselves. Remember, that if you are not scowling from fear of everything then you are not patriotic. Anybody with a smile is potentially a hostile person. Since I love confrontation I smile all the time. Charles, You are a romantic and lover of the sea. You must try a sport that they practice here that I believe you would enjoy. It is 'Ice Boating'. Most exhilirating. Takes your breath away on a cold day.

There are Icesailing competitions between several of the countries of comes to mind between Germany/Finland/Norway/Holland and Sweden. Even divided between different classes. Even some with now, clear sails for visibility as to avoid collisions on the crowed lake ice. Charles

It is snowing now. The first snow came a couple of days ago and it brightened out our surroundings. I understand what Pieter talks about. I wish he had some snow there in Holland.

Winter melencholy? Cabin fever? Wow! It is quite early for that, but just think: in less than 2 weeks the days start getting longer.
The time to watch for depression from the winter is - in the spring. Psychologists have noted that the greatest depression and suicide rate is not during the depressing, dark winter, but first when a person trudges through the heavy burden, and it is then lifted by the sunlight and coming warmth. Then the psyche relaxes and the bad side of cabin fever comes out.
So carry through! If you are truly bothered by winter depression, buy a SAD (Seasonal Disorder) lamp and use it. They are well worth the expense.

To all,
This is a very Happy time for me, knowing that we will all be together, except, my son, who lives in Florida, for the Christmas Eve and Day. And looking forward to see the eyes of my Grandchildren when they get all there gifts. All the great food we will share, and all just setting around the fireplace, after the children go off to sleep, and just sharing with each other. Snow is a must for Christmas, Santa needs it. Don't look at this as a sad time, look for all the good things it brings. And next month, if we have the snow, being able to take the Grandchildren out to play in the snow, and sled. This is a great time, that we will miss when they also, like our Children, grow up, and you can no longer do this with them. Try and find the good in things, they are there, just look.

Rdy,
The local paper came out with a list fo 15 healthy activities to engage in when we enjoy our 5.5 hours of daylight in Anchorage (Barrow has 3 months of darkness).
1) Stargaze
2) Go to a hot yoga class
3) Play winter frisbee-golf
4) Light candles
5) Go to a hockey game
6) Take a sauna
7) Have an eggnog latte
8) Plan a vacation online
9) Visit a tanning booth
10) Paint a room
11) Go swimming
12) Go caroling
13) Build a bonfire
14) Take a cooking class
15) Ice skate
Not much of a help, eh? Painting a room makes me think of paint fumes and sniffing the solvents and taking a trip without going anywhere ... not the best of ideas!

Michael,
I have similar feeling with the holidays coming. Perhaps it is with the innocense of our grandchildren we are able to truly enjoy Christmas to the fullest. We now have the time that was lacking with our own children to just enjoy it all!
I hope you and your family enjoy a beautiful Christmas with lots of snow for Santa.
Mary
