Found these comments on anther list and thought it might be appropriate to post them here.
I read this post an I agree there is alot of negative crap written about Poland and Polish people. Especially those in the UK and Ireland. Anyway I thought |'d trawl the web for positive comments by others. Having visited the BBC site I have lifted all the comments extolling Polands virtues.
Jacek, Poland
Beautiful places, last untouched habitat in Europe, wonderful people. History and the present. Realistic, proud people, who look up to their tradition and culture, who would like to touch stars, who are open to others people and nations, who respect them, their traditions and religions. The nation, which had created the current European pattern stopping German crusaders in 972 and 1410, Chingiz Chan forces in 1241, Ottoman Empire in 1672, Red Army in 1920 and finally blew up Communist Empire in 1989. Visit us and try to feel different atmosphere!

Hi!I`m happy that bbc decided to choose my country to be discussed in here.Anyway, all I wanted to add is just Poland is one of teh best places on earth because of the atmosphere (literally and figuratively), people that are mostly open and friendly. The only one but serious disadventage is our government and unability to rule clever. Well, yeah, I hope EU will change it.

Hi everyone! I live in south Poland. There are beautiful mountains. I love this place. My house is situated near the forest. I have a room with a mountain-view. In winter we have a lot of snow. Sometimes I can't arrive to my house because is too much snow!!! There are many ski lifts. I love skiing. In summer and especially in autumn mountains and forests are wonderful. When I have time I hike on mountains. Polish food is grand. I live in the country. Shops are closed at 6.00 p.m here:) People work here very heavily. I travel to my school 34 kilometres so I wake up at 5.00 a.m. every day In the cities life is much easier and people earn much money. But I don't complain. I invite you to Poland, especially to mountains.

Well, I'm 17, so I have lived much time in Poland. I'm very pleased you say so nice words about our country. It has many disadvantages. But we love it and we are very proud of that!!! It's just bad to know that people think that we don't know what supermarket is.... Our past is very tragic, but we aren't backward!!!

I'm from Cracow, probably the most beautiful city in Poland. What makes Poland special? At the moment we're undergoing a difficult period (actually it's been the case for a couple of centuries) as we have the first right-wing government after a chain of post-communist ones. Strangely enough, the Polish are not happy about it. But let's forget politics! It's a difficult issue. The food is lovely, although not for slimmers. The Polish are full of paradoxes: warm and friendly, but go on complaining about everything, especially the government. I think the country has a great potential... I'm proud to be Polish!!!!!

Poland is my homeland and the place where I live. Although, I want to leave my country one day and go abroad, I am strongly convinced that if you spend a few days in PL, you will remember this time forever and want to come back! Our landscapes are so picturesque, food is very delicious and healthy (try Polish bread!!!), people are open, friendly and sociable! There are so many places worth visiting e.g Cracow, Warsaw, Torun;, Lublin, Wroclaw, Zakopane, Bieszczady (mountains), Baltyk Sea, national parks, our nature and many many others! I know many people who spent some time in my country and they were so impressed that they try to come back there Poland is rather a cheap country for foreigners, so don't hesitate and come to Poland!

I think Poland is a beautiful place, so I'd like to know it someday, I've got some research about culture, food, and ways to live in Poland, but I've never been there. In fact based in my researches, Poland is wonderful.

If there is anything what makes Poland special it is it's history. However Poland has been part of Europe for 1000 years it has been also a country between West and East. It may sounds strange for many people but for more than 4 centuries Poland in union with Lihuania (as The United Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania) was the largest country in Europe with an area of almost 1.000.000 sq km and experienced it's great time in the history, as the country of many religions, nationalities, respect for others and especially tolerance. Such long period of cohabitation of Poles, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Germans, Jews, Tartars, Armenians has influenced the culture, tradition and the kitchen. Generally Polish people are open and friendly. On the other hand they very often underestimate themselves since there is still a big difference in level of life between Poland and other European communities. We are on the beginning of our way of creating market economy and need some more years to change negative stereotypes about the country. As I see from your opinions it's going to happen.

I was born and grew up in Lublin, Poland - It's not as "chic" city to visit as Krakow or Zakopane, but it is beautiful and has a rich history (such as being the location of the Polish-Latvian Union). Although Poland has been divided in the past and the boarders have moved East and West, Lublin has always remained in the Polish core, unless Poland ceased to exist as a country. I have visited Lublin many times since moving to Toronto, and I miss its Krakowskie Przedmiescie and Starowka, with the cafes and pubs. I also have very fond memories of Kazimierz Dolny (just a short drive from Lublin) - I strongly recommend it to anyone intending to visit Poland. All of the comments about fantastic Polish food and folklore are absolutely true - the food is delicious and the folklore is extremely colorful. The country is rich in history and culture, but the nation is ravaged by foreign influnences, both on political and cultural level, and that saddens me greatly. I love Toronto and it is my home, but Lublin will always have a very special place in my heart

It's really amazing that most of you write that Poland is... beautfiful country wiht many monuments, reach history, good food and traditions. It's true. Nowadays we are able to be a well-known country not 'cause a food etc. but thanks to our personality. We have a lot to do. As you were talking about JP2, Chopin, Sklodowska- we have to be proud of them... and proud of our future not only past. It's true everyone who come to Poland say- why you are not proud of your country. Politic is not good, but WE ARE OK...

I love my country,it is true,Many years ago,I noticed odd traits that others in my life, didn't do.I had an insationly strong desire for Polish food, music dress, and (Ah yes)women. The most gorgeous in the world, My awakening came with meeting an incredably beautiful young lady,culmin- ating in a 3week visit to Poland. The people,I found to be the most caring & engaging, than I have ever encountered in any country. My hosts treated me as one of their own family and would accept no recompence! Hello everyone, I am impressed that many of you love Poland. I have a friend from Opole - a girl who came to us to Paris in order to babysit our daughter. She was wonderful and cheerful. I thought that Polish peole don't know what is e.g. a huge supermarket etc, but I realised that Poland is not far far far away on the North where are only polar bears on the road, but it is a country on the high level of development. Polish people know how to behave and look like. They are very ambitious, tolerant, amusing and they have their own values. I love Cracow, Varsovie, Wroclaw, but the most - Opole ( a capital of POlish music). I really appreciate that I have a Polish friend and I have a possibility to get to know Polish well, without any stereotypes beleieves. Go to see Poland: the sea, lakes, valley, mountains, castles, artistic and historical sites. The Polish food and music are the best in the world!

I am Russian from Latvia but I speak a bit of Polish. I worked in a joint Latvian-Polish company and had some friends. So I started to study Polish. I learned about dramatic history of Poland and I liked Polish literature and cinmatography. Also I am keen on the poetry of Mickievicz, the greatest Polish poet, too. I like politeness and purposefullness of Polish as well as their good sense of humour. And I sympathize with Polish people because lots of them have to find a job abroad. Unfortunately, I was in Poland only for ... some hours when I tavelled to Czech Republic. WE saew the beatiful centre of its capital Warszawa. I hope I make a real journey into Poland. Do widzennia!

Poland is really, really beautfiful country wiht many monuments, but we were under ocupation and we're "free" from 1989. After this time, our life style changed,we're in EU and in NATO, but many people are still really unhappy. We have dirty streets, many thiefs and homeless people. I'm from Cracow, porbably the most beautiful city in Poland and I'm happy of my life situation, but I can't say, that in all places in my country people have life like me:/ And the saddest thing is our government, many young people are truely unsatisfied of our new president. Nobody really knows, what is feauture of Poland, everything can happen. But it's only this worse facts of Poland,if you want to know sth more optimistic, read below opinions:)

I've lived in Poland since I can remember. I was born here and I love this country, becouse of its atmosphere. I enjoy also polish food, for me our traditional food is better then for example pizza;) I believe also that we live in quite safe place- that issue is really significant for me:)

I am living in Poland since 31 years. I find this country as one of the beautiful on the world. Why ? Because there are many historical monuments and places worth visiting. For example: Old Town in Poznan, Wroclaw. People who will come to this country will be able to find many beutiful places for their holidays. The most popular places are: Mazury in the East, "Baltic sea" in the North and "Tatra mountains" in the South.

What I know most about Poland is Chopin and Madame Curie. One of my favorite movies is the one telling the life story of Madam Curie, and the other one is about Chopin. Madam Curie named the radioactive matter she discovered after her great country, and Chopin asked his friends to take his heart back to his motherland when his life ended in France. I'm really moved to these doings and words. They loved their country very much, from which point, I can see that Poles must be very proud of country with a high national identification.

I visted Polond briefly in 1993, and spending time mainly in Krakow. I was struck by a sense of sadness especially by seeing young men drunk in the parks and young women often in tears and many gypsies begging with young children. The supermarkets had very little food displayed however the markets were full of paprika etc which was very colourful. Having said that I also must say when I look back on my holiday in Eastern Eurpope it is Poland that brings up my most vivid memories and my most memoriable time. Krakow city is very interesting, seeing its art and wonderful buildings were a joy. The salt mines and Auschwitz have also provided me with amazing memories. I wish the people of poland propserpous and peaceful times ahead.

Hello, it is time for my comment about Poland. I am Polish, i was born and i grew up here. I know my country isn`t perfect, we have a lot of disadvantages but i am proud i come from this country. Why? Poland has a long and dramatic history. There were times when Poland didn`t exsist...or no, i used not appropriate words...Poland exsisted...in hearts of our ancestors. They fighted for this what we have now...some of them had to die but they knew they were fighting for the right thing...for our freedom. I say thank you and i think all of us should be grateful.

I went to Poland in 2003.If I had not have polish friends who I found them nice and friendly.I would have gone there. I found unique food on the menu, like beet soup. The most memoriable place was Auschwitz Concentration Camp. When I stood in front of the wall where people were shooted. I was really sad and almost cried. Travelling around Poland was not just sightseeing but also finding histories of Poland myself. I miss Polish friends and beautiful Polish landscape.

I love Poland! especially Krakow, it is a local city and full of colorful culture, I love Polish, they usually friendly to tourists, I like Milk bar, it sells local Polish meals and the price is reasonable. Poland is a big country which has many many things could see, I feel like to visit this beautiful country again.

Poland is one of the best places in Europe. I was often in Kraków and enjoyed the people, traditional buildings, the atmoshphared restaurants, Chopskie Jadlo (old style restaurant with housing meals), the good smell on the streets...etc. If I go to Poland I'am sure it will be a very special time and I can suggest for everyone.

Last month I visited Poland for a couple of days. I can´t judge beauty of this country much since I didn´t have many opportunities to travel there (although from pics its beauty is apparent ), but what I was really pleased with was generosity and friendliness of the Poles. And the food....YUMMY!!!! Moreover, if you take into consideration their funny - but sweet as well - language..... All in all, I can only recommend this country! ( btw if you are there , don´t forget to visit its neighbor country Czech! )

I'm happy that many polish peoples and foreigner write good about our cantry I think that we can boast our military science. Hussars (polish heavy horse ridding) to XVI century. Battle of Wien, War Polish with Bolshevik in 1920, air force. We are very good aviators and constructors of planes
Gautam, India
I think Poland is very civilised country and people have lot of respect for others. Once I asked some of tourists from Poland visiting India about the way of people live in Poland. They answered that their life is very hectick. They love travel

What I love about my country are its forests and meadows, mountains and valleys and our sea and also lakes. I live in north-eastern part which is known as "green lungs" of Poland. What I love most about this region is it's multicultral heritage. Next to catholic churches we have many orthodox ones as well as some synagogues and even some mosques. People are hospitable, nature and landscapes are splendid and the weather... well, it's changeable.
Daniela, Slovakia
Hello everybody, I live in Slovakia in town Tvrdosin - we are neigbours with Poland, and I live near the border. I do not know Poland very well, I have been there only on small trips, but a lot of Polish people come to our region, to spend here their holiday, and I must say, they are very nice. They are very outgoing and never rude.. I like them.. sometimes it is funny to talk with Polish people, because we have similar languages, but not the same. And there are some words that are in both languages, but have different meaning. For example "zachod" in Polish means west, but in our language it means toilet.. so sometimes communication is a great fun.. I like Poland..
Vietnam
I know Poland not very well, but I learnt that Poland is a beatiful country. There are many landscapes where people can visit at the weekend or on holidays. I wish I will have a vacation in this country in the near furture.

What makes Poland special? Polish cities with rich history like Cracow, Gdask, Wroclaw....!!!!! I came from Toru the place of birth of Nicholaus Copernicus the most famous scientist in Polish history. Toru is the second Polish city, afer Cracow, with the greatest number of retained, authentic monuments in the Gothic style. Layout of streets of Torun Old Town has not been changed for centuries. In Poland we call Torun " the small Cracow" because both are similar. The most famous sweetness which has been made for centuries is the Torun gingerbread. Nicholaus Copernicus University is continuation of Copernican scientific traditions. The Old Town Complex of Torun was inscribed on the List of the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Regards

I live in Poland since I was born (That was 15 years ago). I think Poland is a beautyful country, especially Cracow. That city is so famous because here there lot's of monuments in the center, with beautyful market-place. People are very friendly, men are very handsome, food is delicies, weather almost everyday is great :-) Invite to Poland... and Salt Mine in Wieliczka.
Marta, Poland
Poland is beautiful! Everyone always travel to visit some other places but my country is also worth-admiring! We have wonderful mountains in the South, Baltic Sea in the North, Mazury... We are still proud of our Pope John Paul II and things he did to our society. The Poles are very hospitable so visit us as fast as you can!!!
Bartosz, Poland
I will tell you how I see Poland. We have capitalism, but without money. We have democracy, but still more russian style (good jobs for friends and members of families). Salaries are very low. Culture of living, communicating is quite poor, even if "facades" are fresh painted. Of course things are developing. We are on good way. But for me, "pokolenia 1200 zl brutto"-"generation 300 euro gross"(average salary for graduates and young), for me changes are too slow. So i will probably leave my beautiful country for 2, 3 or 5 years.
Huynh xuan Quang
I think that Poland is the most beautifull country in eastern Europe. In the past Vietnam and Poland have related very good, so To huu poet has a poet wonderfull describle about Poland.

What to say about Poland? I may say just good things about this marvellous and unknown country at the same time. My partner is from Poland and I first went there on holidays this summer. I was impressed by everything. I had the chance of knowing polish history, culture, food, people, etc. I went across the country from Gdansk to Krakow and I realised that I was absolutely mistaken about polish culture. I recommended Poland to anyone, I am sure you will not regret visiting it.
Krzysiek, Poland
What makes Poland special? I think history. I don't know any other country with such long and dramatic history. And some detail about polish people nature. I think the Polish never give up, they are always aspire to aim. And in the end a good advice for foreigners don't watch (when you are in Poland) in TV the sitting of polish parlament if you don't want to fall asleep. But remember all things besides politicians in Poland are really good so come and see our beautiful country.
Madzia, Polska
The beauty of Poland is unquestionable. Come to check it.

Hello! Poland is really beautiful country, especially in summer but still not known well. Despite pretty weird political situation people are nice and very hospitable. If you'll have few free days visit us. I'm sure you will have great time!

Hello everyone!I'm from Poland.I have already written almost all comments about my country, and I am really grateful for them. I live in small city Pabianice, located in the centre of Poland. My city is next to Lodz, which is well-known city and its famous for the longest street in Europe-the Piotrkowska Street. So if you would like to fell the atmosphere of the small city and see old churches I strongly recommend vivisting my city-Pabianice, but if you would like to not only see monuments as well as old building but spend free time in active way I recommend Lódz.
Joanna, Poland
I'm from Poland and I like my country very much. I enjoy travelling and I have visited many of beautiful places in my homeland (and in many other countries). Two weeks ago I went to the Baltic Sea and visited Gdansk (famous for Solidarity movement), Sopot (with the longest molo in Europe) Wroclaw (beautiful city), Torun (when Nicolaus Copernicus was born), and Malbork ( with picturesque and huge medieval castle) and Oswiecim (when there was german death camp and now it's a wonderful museum). I know Poland very much but on this trip I felt in love with her once again. I know that there are many amazing places in the world but I know also that Poland is really worth to see.

The twins, Kaczynski’s brothers rule in the Polish Government. Some people describe them as catholic and therefore conservative. Mind you, that they were advisers of Lech Walesa as a president in the past. Being catholic is not wrong. During communistic regime, Catholic Church through sermons also fought with communism. The priests told the truth to catholic believers without censorship and motivated them to fight communism. The priest Popieluszko was killed by the order of top rank Soviet Communists, as his sermons and not only them, went too far. Anyway, by strikes, exchanging the truth, “Round Table” without spelling blood, the Polish People during nearly 40 years had overcome the Soviet Communists. I think, in 90’s we were nearly free. Total independence, we gained a few years ago. One of the greatest achievements of Lech Walesa was removing Soviet Troops from Poland. The period of communism by artificial isolation from the West, made our economy far behind the Western Countries. We still have to compensate for the delay at economy by working harder for lesser wages and salaries. We are proud of those, who gave us back our freedom. However, many Polish People do not appreciate, that we are a free nation, belonging to European Union and NATO. We will probably not have to fight for our freedom as our ancestors did, so we have to appreciate freedom, and because of our history, we must not take freedom for granted. “Do not meddle with your roots”/to younger Polish generation/.

I went to Krakow in August and the atmosphere was very fascinating .The city was the old capital of Poland ,its buildings are an important heritage and explanation of Poland's history. I saw people along the streets they played classic music or sold wonderful portraits of landascapes .I ate Bigos ,very strong food and drunk beer or Pivo in polski.People were sociable and happy to see tourists

( btw if you are there , don´t forget to visit its neighbor country Czech! )
