Federal Minister Steinmeier congratulates Al Gore and the UN International Panel on Climate Change on winning the Nobel Peace Prize
Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier today issued the following statement on the announcement that the Nobel Peace Prize was to be awarded to former US Vice-President Al Gore and the UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC):
"I warmly congratulate former US Vice-President Al Gore and the IPCC on being honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize today! Both have made major contributions to the international climate debate and have helped to increase global awareness of the dangers of man-made climate change and of the urgent need for speedy and determined action.
Through this award the Nobel Committee has recognized climate change and in particular its security-policy consequences as being one of the 21st century's greatest challenges.
Germany's EU and G8 Presidencies this year have made climate protection one of their main concerns. The March 2007 European Council, with its ambitious decisions on the reduction of greenhouse gases, and the declaration adopted at the Heiligendamm G8 Summit were important steps towards a global answer to climate change. This route must be resolutely followed during the UN climate conference in Bali at the end of the year.
My hope is that this distinction will give the international climate negotiations further impetus."
