Who is your favorite candidate for a president of the US? I may say, that although in general I am a supporter of a real change and I would like a democrat candidate to win.... I also have some favorites among republicans and in certain combinations I might even support a republican over the democrat.
Just to tell you that I am not that close-minded...

Although my favorite candidate is Condoleezza Rice, I voted for Hillary Clinton, because she is an intelligent, charismatic, experianced candidate. I have nothing against presidential families and so political dynasties. I often find politics to short term oriented and superficial. In tribal and royal countries you get experianced leader through long rule of political dynasties who have gained experiances through the decades or centuries. We in the West look down on that, but it worked for quite some time with the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, the African tribes (Xsosa's and Zulu's in Southern Africa) and the clans in Scotland and the Nobility in Europe (the Schlachtza and Magnata in Poland). Today we judge it from a egalitarian point of view, because the class society was broken down by the French revolution, enlightenment and the emerging ideologies of the 19th century (socialism, liberalism, Christian-democracy and Modern democracy). Political dynasties can be elitarian and considered conservative (or liberal in peoples conservatives eyes), but they can have a benefit above the one generation, popular, peoples choice. Hillary Clinton has experiance as a lawyer, wife of the gouverner of Arkansas, the president of the United States, and as a senator for the state New York. You may like it or not, but she can use this experiance to be a very good president. I know I am a pragmatic and a liberal-conservative in my views, but I really think that if the Americans would give her a chance, she could be respected by both liberals and conservatives, democrats, republicans and Independant voters. The fact that she was raised in a politically conservative household, volunteered for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater in the U.S. presidential election of 1964, was a fervent anti-communist like her father and that she served as president of the Wellesley Young Republicans organization in her youth makes her even more human. She is a Democrat and liberal who also appeals to conservatives like media mogul Rupert Murdoch says something! There is a lot of mudslinging and other negative campaigning against the Clintons, but just wait and see what she could acheeve as president!

Did you notice that the GOP party does not have a one annointed candidate like pres. Bush was 8 years ago? It was Giuliani for some time but he is not accepted by evangelican Christians and he has too much of baggage with him (corruption scandals, multiple affairs). Here is a very interesting article about a different treatment of establishment candidates (Clinton, Obama, Giuliani and Romney) and non-establishment candidates: www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/12/19/establishment_candidates/index.htmlMedia hostility toward anti-establishment candidates There is no question that the media has paid far less attention to Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee than the respective successes of their campaigns merit. To that list, though, I would add a third candidacy that has received far less media attention than it merits by all objective metrics (polls, stature and money): the John Edwards campaign. ...

I am quite excited with the results of elections in Iowa. Both winners, Obama and Huckabee are my favorites. They are not establishment candidates and they are more authentic than for instance Mit Romney. If you would like to see Mitt Romney and how he talks so that he does not say anything (and also states that "one can pick up a random employee from state department to do a foreign policy) please listen to this interview: www.newshounds.us/2008/01/03/romney_a_little_foreign_policy_knowhow_is_enough_for_a_president.phpof course he is always smily and happy and he is always a good guy and he is always right and... he likes these other guys except that they are wrong on key issues and he has nothing to do with abortion in his state because ... court did this.... HOW ANYBODY CAN TRUST THIS GUY???

Leslie, Where did you read/hear this? I found the test of his speech last night and I could not find anywhere where he said that he will ensure America saves the world. Link to speech text at tinyurl.com/32a6exThe closest thing I could find is this passage "Hope is what led me here today – with a father from Kenya; a mother from Kansas; and a story that could only happen in the United States of America. It is the bedrock of this nation; the belief that our destiny will not be written for us, but by us; by all those men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is; who have the courage to remake the world as it should be." I read "world" here as an idea not as a concrete thing. That we all have he responsibility to work for what we think the world should be like - and not just sit back and accept things as they are.

Chris (Holli)
On the BBC television news, the on-the-spot commentator included Obama's comments to the crowd - this is where I heard this statement. There possibly was an official statement later that had cut this out. Otherwise I don't know.

Leslie, I went to BBC and the Guardian and listed to their reports on Obama's victory last night - I didn't hear your statement. As you say, it may have been cut out - but I doubt it. At this point there is so much scrutiny on these guys to make a mistake ANY mistake the other side can exploit, there is very little that you can hide. For a Democratic candidate to say that the American can save the world - would be such a mistake (for obvious reasons). it would be HUGE news following on the win last night. Now if it had been a Republican - not such much on the news front.

Jaga, Would you really want a minister(Huckabee is a Baptist minister) or a priest, rabbi or other clerics as the leader of our nation? America was founded on the principle of separation of church and state which is provided for in Amendment I of our Constitution. For the past seven years our country's federal government has been heavily influenced by right wing religious conservatives and look where that has taken us. Let the religious leaders tend to the spiritual and moral needs of their congregations in their houses of worship, not in the White House.
