Charles, This is the Christiane Amanpour report. You probably have already read it on the Spiegel website. This is the first I've seen it on CNN. Amanpour is a CNN reporter. Perhaps this was a rerun, but I'd not seen it previously. What do you think?

"Czar Putin" documentary is available on msn under the "CNN/czar putin" search word, and then click on "Videos sobre: Amanpour." The segment, divided in two parts, more than anything else documents the incredible story of Russia going from rags to riches in the last decade, thanks to oil ... and Putin. The riches are indeed amazing. Ten years ago, Moscow was a cold, dark city filled with beggars and babushkas. Today, the strees are filled with the most expensive cars and furs in the world, and many babushkas dress in stylish clothes that would confound many in Hollywood. I doubt America has ever seen anything like it. But there is a sinister side to all this, reasons Amanpour. All this transformation should be seen against the backdrop of the murder of Ana Politkowskaya, which mysteriously happened on Putin's birthday, and which symbolizes suppression of free speech in Russia. Today, be as it may, Putin appears to many as the new czar of Russia. Whether this is good or bad, the time will tell and I don't know. The Communist Russia was dangerous; the modern Russia is dangerous in different ways. My side observation to all this is that this story alerts us to how fast the world has been changing in the last years. I wonder if America understands what is really going on in Russia and in China, our common nemeses of the past. Who really lost the Cold War, them or us? If we are the losers, do we have a plan to cope with the new realities? One thing is certain, if we do not understand the world, we will soon be left behind on the world arena!
