I have never supported the independence of Kosovo. This was done arbitrarily by the United States and other Western powers. It was done primarily for political reasons, to upset Russia and China. The problem is that this action is likely to turn against the United States because the action is unlawful in principle! We see right now what is happening in Belgrade. The Americans have fled their own embassy despite the Marines and other guards. The sovereignty of the American diplomatic mission was compromised. The American visitors are in mortal danger. The streets of Belgrade are on fire, and this will not end until there are lives lost and there is forcible military intervention. Will Russia sit quietly as the Serbs are being slaughtered? I doubt. If this scenario happens, America will have to stand up and recognize that it's Administration and the State Department has made a huge Beaves & Butthead mistake of unpredictable consequences!

I am so sorry Nathanael This is not of America or EU, it is of a people, of families, for freedom. It is of a nation of Independence, a new nation of the world, for not of Serbia or Russians, or Yugoslavia of old, it is now and for ever, Kosovo. World history has been changed after 18 years. Today is the present, yesterday no longer matters but only in memory. Serbs are not of being slaughtered, for those few within the new nation, have option to stay and as so, be the new citizens of a new nation, or to leave at their option. With what ever, they are still under the protection of the government of Kosovo and as so, they are citizens there of. With some time, the Serbians and their master and benefactor, The Russian Federation, will make omens of reluctant peace with the new nation upon their block. For what choice is now at their disposal? For the land they must now cross for the oil and gas {Earth gas} from the Caspian region, is not so easily accessible. For this land is now an independent nation. Today is about oil and money. Yesterday, it was of Christianity/Islamic. Yesterday is departed and will not again be relieved. Today is the present, and we must live this day out to see tomorrow. Serbia will make the usual sounds of unhappiness, but, in the end, they will do what they must, and that is accept the present. With as much to the American Embassy mission, it will survive and change out the old letter heads, and replace them with the new ones, and continue as usual. For also this has previously been accomplished with the German Mission. Thank you for post reply and interest, I was not of any expectation of interest. I think perhaps only that of Carl is Albanian. Only time will tell whether your optimism is valid. I am no particular friend of the Serbs, either. When Serbs were hurling mortar shells into the Sarajevo market, I was one of the first to dare the British government in a letter, to show that they aren't cowards by immediately bombing the mortars around that town (at that time, this indeed required a great courage on part of NATO). I also strongly denounced the genocide in Srebrenica. But the precedent of giving a province independence by force is out of this world! It's going too far! I just hope that you are right in your optimism. What will America do if Alaska declares independence, with Russian "recognition"? Will we just say, it's OK?

Actually Nathanael, you do have some excellent points you have brought forward. And as you say, the action of break away was an illegal act, with the EU being accused of double standards by The Russian Federation. Russia may only protest as they are a member of the Security council with power of veto, but are not a member of the EU.
I have omitted the sore spot of Serbia. Is the view of Kosovo being the birth place of Serbia. For also that Serbia become independent from Yugoslavia in a similar action.
With the burning of the American Embassy, this should not have occurred if proper precautions were to have been taken. So far, all embassy employees have been accounted for in as much as been reported. The one burnt body found in the building has so far been un-identified.
You have brought up another excellent point of curios to me of the American system of states and the possibility of one to break away as an independent nation. This would be a good subject on a different thread. {was not this the prime reason of their Civil War}?

The news that Dr. Voislav Kostunica has just dissolved the Serbian pro-West government is exactly what I suspected will happen: a nightmare scenario. One does not tear the heart of a nation in exchange for a vague promise of prosperity associated with joining the European Union. The new elections are to be held on May 11, and an almost certain attempt by Serbia to join Russia. There is nothing in the world that stands on the way for this to happen. A nation will rather choose poverty, than losing her heart! Those politicians throughout the world, especially in the United States, who tought that Serbia's love for Kosovo will somehow "dissipate" may have been utterly wrong, and the final chapter is probably yet to be written.

Serbia's Government Collapses By DUSAN STOJANOVIC – 17 hours ago
BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia's government collapsed Saturday over an impasse between the nationalist prime minister and the pro-Western president on how Kosovo's independence affects the Balkan country's pursuit of EU membership.
"The government, which does not have united policies, cannot function," Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said as he announced the fall of his Cabinet. "That's the end of the government."
Kostunica said he will convene a session of the caretaker government Monday, which will propose to President Boris Tadic to dissolve the Parliament and call new elections for May 11.
Tadic said in a statement that he will call early elections because they are a "democratic way to overcome the political crisis."
But he disputed Kostunica's claim that their clash was over Kosovo, the Serbian medieval heartland which proclaimed independence last month with the backing of the United States and several EU countries.
"Kosovo is of course an integral part of our country," Tadic said.
"I believe the issue is that the Serbian government does not have a united position over European and economic perspectives of Serbia and its citizens," he added.
Kostunica said the government "will function in a reduced capacity until the elections are held."
He insists that EU governments recognizing Kosovo must rescind their decisions before Serbia resumes initial membership talks with the 27-nation bloc. Within his government, Kostunica accuses pro-Western ministers of failing to support his efforts to preserve Kosovo as part of Serbia.
Tadic opposes tying Serbia's EU membership to the issue of Kosovo, which has been recognized as an independent state by several leading EU nations, including Britain, France and Germany.
"All parties want Serbia to join the EU, but the question is how — with or without Kosovo," Kostunica said. "There was no united will to clearly and loudly state that Serbia can continue its path toward the EU only with Kosovo."
Pro-Western minister Mladjan Dinkic said Kostunica's decision was "honorable, democratic and the only possible solution."
"Anything else would be an agony," Dinkic said. "It is now honest to ask the citizens which way Serbia will go in the future."
New elections could determine whether Serbia continues toward the EU and Western institutions or takes a more isolationist approach reminiscent of Yugoslavia in the 1990s under the late strongman Slobodan Milosevic.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on Feb. 17. The predominantly ethnic Albanian province had been under U.N. control since 1999, when NATO launched an air war to stop a Serb crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists.
But Serbia, which considers the territory its historic and religious heartland, has rejected Kosovo's move as illegal under international law.
The Serbian government's cabinet, made up of Kostunica's conservatives and pro-Western democrats, was formed in May, following months of strained negotiations in the wake of the last parliamentary elections in January 2007.
The ultranationalist Serbian Radical Party said new elections are "a good solution."
"Serbia has been in a crisis for a long time," said senior party official Aleksandar Vucic.
Liberal Party leader Cedomir Jovanovic said the elections should offer a "clear chance to break up with the past policies that have divided the people and pushed it away from the world."
Jovanovic called for a new policies on Kosovo and said future government leaders should "tell the truth" about Kosovo and immediately arrest the remaining Serb war crimes fugitives.
Capture of Gen. Ratko Mladic and other suspects still at large from the wars of the 1990s is the condition set by the EU for Serbia's further integration into the bloc.
In Kosovo, deputy Prime Minister Hajredin Kuqi expressed hope Serbia's voters will leave the past behind in the new elections.
"For Kosovo it is very important to have a government in Serbia that is pro-Western and works for cooperation," he said.
Associated Press Writer Jovana Gec contributed to this report.

I don't like euphemisms, but nothing better comes to mind than "I told you so." The media has just reported that the NATO forces "have been fired upon," and that UN forces "fled Kosovo, challenging the judgment of the European Union and the United States." I have never doubted, for years, that partition was the only solution for Kosovo. But my voice has been overridden by the critically impaired critical analysts of today (the same analysts that got us into and managed catastrophically, Iraq)! Now the media throughout the world are saying that "Kosovo may be heading for partition one month after breaking away from Serbia, after all." The sooner, the better! This is the only chance for a peaceful Serbia!

It would so appear of the in-evitable of backlash to evolve with this break-away-province. But, remember of Serbia, also their actions in similar as a break-away-province from Yugoslavia.
What is fortunate at this time, is the failure of the Serbian Government to stay with a majority consensus to a plan of action. This has in this stead, been to the initiative of mob actions.
Kosovo is a sty in the eye with many neighbour stats {countries} in this area. For with the break away of Kosovo, has the potential of giving the green light for similar actions to occur with other provinces.
With this, as prepared for in April {2008} The EU is as plan, to sign a Stabilization and Association Agreement with, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
