Mary,
I stuck the 'Brave New World" in there as an inspiration, not a plan. Just as no one in 1880 could guess how the world would be revolutionized by 1930, much less 2009, I doubt we can guess what lies ahead of this world. My best guess just goes far enough to say we may well be at the beginning of another massive revolution. Thus we do have to keep courage and do the best we can.
Ahh yes, we have an election in ten days in Anchorage, and it seems every two years the school board asks for another $100,000,000 in bonds. This is for a city of 350,000 people!
I hope the revolution includes adjusting people away from 'entitlement', be it oldsters with Social Security guaranteeing everything, or teachers expecting greater than inflation pay raises or increased tax breaks for various groups and church peripheral activities. Today it seems everyone thinks they should pay no taxes and receive a greater than average share of benefits. Bankers seem to have attained the ultimate, where they receive bonuses for failure!
We do live in fascinating times.

I think, the first petroleum mine was also established in Poland. For a very short time Poland was one of the 3-4 biggest petroleum powers in the world. here is more about Polish petroleum history (in Polish and English): www.geo.uw.edu.pl/BOBRKA/DATY/daty.htm

Kai, I live in a very small, rural area that is, and has been as far back as I can remember, economically depressed. We are relatively accustomed to living within our means. The increase in taxes that they wanted had nearly everyone crazed to the point of armed revolt! We don't have very many children here, and even the old school was plenty big enough for grades K-12. I believe we have less than 700 students in the whole countyIt is mostly elderly living on social security. I am one of the "young" ones, and I'm almost 56! So you can see why there was such an uproar over what they wanted in new taxes
On the up side.... It's a beautiful, relaxed place to live. Many of the "campers" end up retiring here.
