Today’s Islamic fanatic terrorism started in the French-Algerian war (1954-’62), and it was intensified by the Soviet-Afghan conflict in the 1980’s.
Did the Soviet and other Communists initiate anti-colonialism in North Africa? The answer is no. Franco, head of Fascist-type Nationalist Spain did. Franco led the Falange, a nationalist socialist political party. In the 1930’s, he disliked the Western democratic republican powers—England, France and even the USA because the USA defeated Spain during the Spanish American war (1998) and replaced Spain as the dominant power in Central & South America. Franco wanted to restore the Spanish empire in the Americas. Under Franco, Spain’s economy was socialist.
As a youngster in Bronx, NYC and interested in Spanish culture, I saw some movies from Spain. Some were pro-Franco (e.g., see below). Although English subtitles are excluded, the visuals are self-explanatory. As shown in these films, Franco started an anti-colonialist policy in N. Africa. The Republican government (including Communists) didn’t advocate anti-colonialism to avoid antagonizing Britain & France which had African colonies. As a result, Moors from Spanish Morocco joined Franco’s army and helped him win the Spanish Civil war (1936). So Franco influenced the anti-colonial wars in Africa that began after World War II.
BTW Franco and Mussolini had anti-racist policies. They advocated equality of the blonde, blue eyed Northerners with the dark skinned Southerners in their respective countries. Also, Mussolini colonized Ethiopia & Libya to challenge England economically, not for racism.
During World War II, Franco and Salazar refused to deport Spanish & Portuguese Jews to Hitler for execution in the death camps.
