forza, I looked up this book on amazon Casino MoscowI can order a used copy for $1.62 + postage. Hmmm, maybe I will... Do you know about M-mail? I (we) can send "bags" of printed matter (= books, magazines) for a low postage rate. ... there is an 11-pound minimum. www.aas.org/donation/mbag.htmlI would be happy to send books to you and zooba (and others) if there are a lot of books you would like and you are not in a big rush to get them otherwise, the postage rates are high - I sometimes have paid more to mail something to Poland than the item cost but I like to provide books ... ;D

Nancy, That would be just great! $4.41 for 11 pounds for shipping air mail sounds unbelievable. There are many books I don't get because of high rates for shipping. I was even thinking about flying to London for books. If you are serious about it I could probably send you my own 11 pound list (I calculate it would be about 15 -20 titles - am I about right?) How is it with local shipping costs? If say, books were bought through one retailer would it save on local postage costs, too? Do you have time for it? I am not in rush myself to get them but your offer is very appealing to me. I'd cover your costs by Western Union wire. I could make my list ready sometime after Christmas. Robert

forza, Sure, I would do this for you. I am thinking I will make a trip to Poland in 2007, half to see new cousins and half to get books, so I understand the need! ;D Send me your list when you have it ready. If the books are paperback, then I think you could get many more than 20 books. If hardcover, well, of course those are heavier. The air mail rate - $4.41 - is per pound, but even so, $4.41 x 11 (~$50) is a lot cheaper than flying to London. I think. The surface rate is much cheaper, but might take a very long time. Our President Thomas Jefferson said it: "I cannot live without books."

Forza, I buy most of my books (and CDs and DVDs) new or used from Half.com and if they have something you're looking for, I'd be happy to get it on your behalf and send it to you.
Nancy, I've never heard of this M-mail thing but it's nice to know you can ship printed matter so cheaply. I guess this is a bit different from Media Mail. Have you used M-mail before? Is it easy or a hassle? My local post office gets confused if you do anything other than standard shipping, so I'd have to go to a bigger postal center.

I also buy a lot of my books used, and often they are really just remainders and therefore half price or much less for a brand new book. Amazon has a lot of links to other booksellers, and I have found some amazing bargains. ;D (I just purchased the one forza mentioned - for $1.62 for a new copy. I'll read it and send it to him.)
M-mail is not the same as media mail, as Suzanne said. I have not used it yet, but a few people on my genealogy lists have, and they say it works fine. In fact, they use it for sending books to Poland! You are right, probably the smaller post offices won't have much experience with it.
Suzanne, we should consolidate/coordinate our book buying for forza (and others). lol - maybe we will start a new service...

That is great. I gladly accept your offer of booksearching for me. I need bargain prices, paperback if possible and don't care for quality as long as all the pages are in place. I was able to find myself some great buys but what prevented me from buying was some extraterrestrial international shipping charges and my mistrust to give credit card number over the net. Also high wiring fee and/or dollar to zloty conversion rates for c card. Perhaps you could ship the books to central base camp (Nancy?) and then someone (Nancy?) would weight it all and mail it to me? I don't know but I am working on my list. Nancy it is really sweet of you to offer me a book.

This will be fun! ;D Forza will write his list. Then we can see who can find the cheapest prices, including shipping, for him! Then of course there is shipping to forza. Maybe someone will volunteer to fly to Poland and deliver the books ... I expect that zooba and maybe pawian or aadam might also be interested in having a big bag of books? PS. Hanging around on these forums with Europeans has made me use smileys too much.

Books are my love and my (only?) addiction. I'll think of some titles and let you know. Last year I ordrred a book and CDs from Amazon but in fact the shipping costs were horrendous. But still I was so glad when it arrived.
