I would be happy to volunteer for this project as well... I have plenty of time at the moment! Chris, Are you going to be in Florida for a while, or are you going to back to Idaho at some point? I don't recall when you are in one place vs. another. Where are there better bookshops? Nancy and all, I will be in Fl until March for sure then maybe back to ID. I would guess Florida has better book stores simply because there are more to choose from - but it may be a quanity over quality thing! IF we are still in Fl after March - we *may* be in Warsaw in March for meetings.

Guys,
I am so glad to see this sisterhood or brotherhood of people willing to help. It is hard to get books in Poland ! I really do not have too much time to get involved but I am willing to contribute financially if needed.

Today I was at the local post office (again!) and asked if they could handle M-mail ... they said yes, they would just need to check on the details. Should not be a problem. ;D I told them I would be nice and wait until after the holidays. I have a house full of books and often take them to our (free) book exchange at the town transfer station (=dump). So I am anxious now to see what forza and zooba are looking for, I might just be able to clean house a little bit!

Zooba, Please tell me what region the DVD players are in Poland. Also I believe that the players format is PAL. Is this correct?

John, what do you mean? DVDs are available in all Poland, you just must have the equipment to play them with. More and more people have home theater systems. I'm sure that PAL is used for VCRs, but I'm not sure if the same thing applies to DVDs. I'll check it out.

Yes...it would be very convenient if those who want books could post their lists or let us know even if it is only one or two books they really want... Like Nancy, I have many books - lots garden books of my own, but many from my youngest daughter who participated in many colloquia while in school that were financially supported and so the books were free. I take many to our Friends of the Library sale cart in the library (paperback books = $.25; hardcover, tapes and DVDs= $.50). It's an easy way to get books into the hands of people who really want them and the Friends make a little spare change!) Some of the really esoteric I sell on Amazon...again get the books into hands of people who really want them; make a little spare change for myself. We also have a free book exchange at our town recycling center... Because we are at the fringes of academic communities (five colleges locally, more to the north and to the south) there are a lot of books being passed around. We could divert a few to Poland

Zooba,
Yes, it makes a difference...I bought a DVD at Jasna Gora last summer. It will not play on our fairly recent and good machine, but will play on one at the local TV, etc. shop owned by a friend.
Some DVDs indicate on the cover; others do not (mine didn't). I have a link for checking out what your DVD player will or will not play. I have to find it...so will post it later.

forza,
I have read about 1/3 of the Casino Moscow book - it is really good. For some reason I thought the book was a novel, but it is nonfiction - an account of this fellow's time in Rusia in 1995/6. Enlightening (and funny).
PS. The author's "Uncle Zbig" was the National Security advisor to Pres. Carter.
PPS. How is your list coming along?

Nancy, I am glad you like the Moscow book. So it is big uncle's relative who wrote it. Splendid! I am interested in the process of transformation from one system into the other one that took place in Russia and the Wall Street Journal journalist located in Moscow, a relative of Brzezinski certainly looks like a good source for Russia news in general and at that moment in nineties. Above is my 'books wanted' list. The numbers do not reflect necessary my priorities but as you see I am after W. Kaufman books I am still confused however how we would go around the whole thing but perhaps we should start with finding good deals and proceed from there. Forza

forza,
I already have a few of the books on your list and will simply pass along my copies to you. The Kite Runner is excellent - one of the best books I read last year.
For some reason, I am not surprised to see Hunter Thompson on your list (I cannot say that I like his work, but for some reason I just "knew" you would want to read "Fear and Loathing" ...)
OK, to start, I will check on local used book prices and free book exchanges. If anyone else (Suzanne, Hollister, GardenMoma) already have copies of any of these, please let me know. Let's see how inexpensively we can do this for forza!

I have a link for checking out what your DVD player will or will not play. I have to find it...so will post it later. I am quoting myself above...here is the link about DVD players and what they will or will not play: www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php Also, here is what the manual with my DVD player has to say about formats: Regional Code Your player has a region code on the back of the unit and will play DVD/Video Disks (playback only) labeled with identical region codes. This system is used to protect copyrights...
If you try to play any other DVD, the message "Playback prohibited by area limitations "will appear on the TV screen. Depending on the DVD, no region code indication may be labeled even though playing the DVD is prohibited by area restrictions. Then the manual goes on to list examples of disks which my particular player can not play... the most important to this discussion is, I believe has to do with color systems - NTSC - most American players as opposed to PAL and SECAM. So, Zooba, if you still have it, please check your player manual or one of your DVD boxes to see what kind you can play. Or maybe ask at a local store. Hope this helps.

I have used Powells for years a wonderful place! They used to brag they were the world's largest bookstore. One main Building is one city block three stories high crammed with books - They have seperate buildings for Science, Cooking and Travel books. If you are a book lover, Powells is like Mecca! They carry new and used titles and as there are several universities in the region - you can always find some unusual titles there. The link to Powells is: www.powells.com/There is a wonderful store here called Haslems, I will check there too! H
