A book I recently heard about is "Those Who Trespass Against Us: One Woman's War Against the Nazis" The purpose of this e-mail is to urge you to read this remarkable book, by the late Countess Karolina Lanckoronska, which will be published on 5th. January, 2006 by PIMLICO, a subsidiary of the Random House Group. I recommend it to you for two main reasons
1) It is a very good book. Written in 1945-46, just after Karolina Lanckoronska's release from Ravensbruck concentration camp, it tells the harrowing story of her wartime experiences in occupied Poland, where she worked with the resistance, was imprisoned and condemned to death, but somehow survived to tell the tale. As Professor Norman Davies writes in the Preface:
" There are many learned tomes analysing the condition of Europe during the Second World War. There are many memoirs relating the triumph of the human spirit over extreme adversity. There is none to equal this memoir in combining such a high degree of learning and insight with such a high degree of decency and compassion".
The title, by the way, is taken from Lanckoronska's account that, during the war when reciting the Lord's Prayer, she could not bring herself to say the words:"...as we forgive those who trespass against us..." because, she explains, she could not forgive the invaders of her country and did not want to lie to God.

OK, to start, I will check on local used book prices and free book exchanges. If anyone else (Suzanne, Hollister, GardenMoma) already have copies of any of these, please let me know. Let's see how inexpensively we can do this for forza! Nancy, It is possible we have some of the Walter Kaufmann books, and if not, I'd be happy to take over the search for those. A quick look around indicated that copies of his works are available pretty cheaply, so if we don't have them and if no one else has them, I'd be happy to obtain them.

I have PM'd you, Chris and forza about the book search. Some of those Kaufmann books seem to be rare, so if you can find them locally and cheaply, that's great!

How are you all coming along with finding the books for Forza?
I checked cheap buy tables at our local library last week; nothing on the list.
So, I will expand my search to local used book stores...but would be helpful to know what others have found.
Thanks,
GM

How are you all coming along with finding the books for Forza? I think Nancy has found a couple of the books, but I haven't come up with anything yet. There is one more used bookstore I can try.

I am finishing a book of "battles of the American Revolution", and have another on General Washington awaiting.
As for "must purchase" this year, I will be getting "The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom: by Slavomir Rawicz . Sent to a Russian Gulag at he start of the war, it's one mans account of a small band of prisoners who escape and trek from Siberia, through China, the Gobi Desert, Tibet, and over the Himalayas to British India.
There have been a few others mentioned I will be interested in as well (definitely not the bubba clinton book..LOL), so keep the the recommendations coming!

Hello, guys! I have a real request to you from my husband - there is a book he needs for his work, which is unavailable in Poland. However, you can buy it at Amazon (of course). Another however is that they only sell new books to Poland and we want a used one. Can anybody help us with this? We can transfer the money to anyone's bank account. Once you know how much it will cost altogether, I mean, the book, the shipping to you and from you to me, we will send the money. This is a book on computer programming (Transactional COM+: Building Scalable Applications (Paperback))- here's the link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/0201615940/qid=1136643082/sr=2-1/Thank you very much.

Using Amazon, I found a copy that was marked "new, never used" for $6.25 (but sold from one of the used book dealers. Shipping to me will be $3.49. I will send you a PM when it arrives. Aww, Nancy, you beat me to it! Just kidding. ;D
After all this, you could have a small business of your own on the side, buying English titles cheaply and shipping them to places Amazon et al. won't!
