Celebrating the Carnival In a Polish Way
By Jerzy Hornik
In keeping with the Polish carnival tradition, PACIM is hosting the 7th annual Bal Kanawalowy (Carnival Ball) on Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 at 6:30 pm. at the Historic University Club in Downtown Saint Paul.
"Enthralling, entertaining, breathtaking, surprising, momentous, awe-inspiring, amusing, beguiling, enchanting, uniting “these are just a few of the words that aptly describe the quintessence and atmosphere of a traditional Polish Bal Kanawa³owy," says Angela McLaughlin, who attended last year's Ball.
Centuries ago carnival balls were arranged for ready-to-be-wedded young ladies to get acquainted with young men during the Carnival. These balls lasted for days and gathered “szlachta” (the high society) and public officials who traveled from one ball to another by horse-drawn carriages and sleighs to expose themselves to the diverse flavors of their host communities.
Today’s bale kanawalowe are equally exciting; instead of involving gun presentations and lavish displays of locally caught game, the balls feature a spectacular display of nightgowns, tuxedos, as well as demonstrations of local artistic talent and innovative catering.
This year’s Bal Karnawalowy will leave you with just the kind of experience you would expect from the traditional Polish carnival. The Ball will delight your senses with a combination of performances, multigenerational music, a multi-course meal, as well as the opportunity to meet other community members through conversation and dance.
