I remember the first time I was flying over deserted areas of American South and West - I could not understand what these strange circles were: there are so regular and not similar to anything around. Can you figure out what it is?

Well, you must admit, it is something Almost of that of a high altitude photograph that has been scrambled with a Mosaic of nonsense non-symmetrical green partial camouflage as a mask. Or spots on my magnification glass. Or worse, bad beer. ooooops, this for our Polish friends Charles

Jaga when flying to the West Coast...if i looked out my window I would see fields below that looked like circle patterns that looked as if someone made them (not done by nature) I always wondered what they were and why they were there. Maybe someone else has seen these also. If I remember correctly they would be about half way between Chicago and Vegas. Your photos do not look like my circles.

I see a picture now in reply #5. Wonderful picture but I have no idea what is creating such a pattern.

Chris, I think you are looking at irrigation circles! The farmers in areas where the rain is not too predictable set up huge sprinker systems that rotate around in a circle watering the crops allowing a longer growing season and diversified crops such as wheat, barley and hay in arid regions. They pump the water out of a reservoir or river to the fields.

I think, you can see at least this image: Ok folks, hollister has the right answere. What you are seeing as squares, rectangles, circles etc. are nothing more than fields with their various types of irrigation equipment. The rectangular ones show irrigation equipment that rolls in a straight line. The circular one show equipment that revolves in a circle as it irrigates.

Holly, guys, you are right of course, there are irrigation circles. By the way, there are also some people who do strange shapes by purpose.. so that it looks strange from the air. But the circles I remember are usually from dry West. Read more here: maps.pomocnik.com/strange-green-circles/Those are irrigation circles, found across the world, and also there in Nevada. Long bars with wheels run in perpetual circles, watering the land and growing crops in otherwise harsh land conditions. they explain what machines are used to do these circles: bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php/Cat/0/Number/233262/an/0/page/0

Full circles I can understand, but half or 3/4 circles? Presumably the machinery can be set to irrigate parts of a circle only.
