Pieter, going back some 35 years ago, we lived in a very rural and small town of Bow, NH. When we received sufficient amount of snow on the ground we would go cross country skiing on the weekends. Several of us in our neighbor hood would, during the day, make trips with cut wood and sipping supplies about 6 miles into the woods. After everybody got home for the evening we would go and ski to the destination made ready. Through much laughter and joy we arrived at the prepared location. We then started the camp fire, roasted slab bacon and bread, had great wine and enjoyed the beauty o0f a New England night in the snow. To this day I have great memories of those times.

Great story. I can't tell this kind of stories, but remember that one or two christmas nights we got stuck in the snow and ice in the Ardennes mountains with for miles no people around. It was freezing cold. I could imagine what the American Gi's who fought the tough Battle of the Bulge must have went through from 16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945.
We made very long cross country ski trips of around 13 miles. That was heavy if the tracks weren't used regularly. That evening that we were stuck after a whole day cross country skiing was somewhat scarry for us kids. But we were pulled out by a belgian van eventually.
Your area must have been more wild and more rough than ours. In the Belgian Ardennes the distance to the nearest people is maybe a few miles. In New England that will be different.

I know this is not New England but I thought it was impressive. Can anyone tell me what those two bridges are?

Wonderful and magic winterimages of New England John. Almost as magic as my La Gomera, but different. It got the Nordic beauty like we Europeans say. Like the Scandinavian landscapes in Northern Europe with their pure beauty, clearness, freshness, power, Northern light and charm. Thank you John!
