Swedish nursery to teach rare Viking-era language

Alvdalen is the only remaining community where Elfdalian is still spoken

A rare language that dates back to the Viking Age will be taught at a new nursery school in central Sweden, it's reported.

Elfdalian will be the sole language spoken to children attending the pre-school in the town of Alvdalen, which is the only community that still uses it, Radio Sweden reports. Elfdalian is believed to be the closest descendant of Old Norse, which was spoken by Scandinavians more than 1,000 years ago.

At the moment, only about 2,500 people can speak the language, fewer than 60 of them children, reports The Local website. To help preserve Elfdalian, councillors in Alvdalen on Tuesday voted unanimously to build the new nursery school. The Local quotes the town's mayor, Peter Egardt, as saying that officials were aware of their responsibility to "get a new generation to speak our unique language, thus giving the language more of a chance to survive in the long term".

The new nursery school will be up and running in the autumn, and the site says that pupils will continue to learn the language until they turn 18.

It is good to keep a language alive and it is only alive when remembered and spoken. Swedes are a bit strange some times. They seem to think Denmark is the land of sweets/candy/sausage/cream and cheese. They have this in their own but do not believe it is as rich and good,,,but it is...

Swedish is understood as long as it is standard Swedish and not spoken too fast. I like Swedish people perhaps not as comfortable as Norwegians but still a good people as most are.

Old Norse is the grandfather of present day Scandinavian language, it is the 12th century Islandic Grey Goose Laws {Yes I know...} that those speaking the same language are: Norwegians/Swedish and Dane. At present of course, time has changed the dialects but to the present, Norwegian and Dansk written words are the same, just the dialects have changed but all are still understandable.

Viking lore is very common in Skandia for as in Norway in some of the small villeges will be found boats of the old design and very sea worthy when the sea turns nasty with only a oil lamp on the bow and oars that are hearty. For then as a cold front comes in over the water, fog then turns the air very chilling to the bone. It is then good to use the oars to create some movement body heat. Parts of Sweden are as of Norway, very rocky and not a good situation to be blown ashore, for those rocks will break up most boats in a few wave lengths and the crabs will then have lunch on the occupants.

With these many years, my Frisian is perhaps a bit suspect, although my Dansk is good. I have heard that our old North Frisian language has been deemed a endangered language. Perhaps this is just as well for why speak two languages when one well do. With so many dialects that has been the curse of Frisian, well what can I say. Although in Pieters world with the Western Frisian is very well used and this is as it should be. Although west of my old haunt of Cuxhaven Frisian is well populated, but also a different dialect.

That is a photo of a work of art in front of the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage, Alaska. It is well worth a visit for anyone coming to Alaska, and I tell visitors the Center is as close as you can get to visiting a native village without going out to one.
