Heinz Reinefarth killed 50 th Poles but was never persecuted

Just recently Polish newspaper revealed a story of Heinz Reinefarth, who was responsible for killing 50-60 thousands citizens of Warsaw in Wola (quarter of Warsaw), but was never persecuted although Poland wanted its extradition from Western Allies. He was even a mayor of city Westerland and he was elected to the parliament (Landtag) of Schleswig-Holstein.

In two days, the units of Reinefarth and SS-Oberführer Oskar Dirlewanger executed approximately 60,000 civilian inhabitants of Warsaw in what is now known as the Wola Massacre. In one of his reports to the commander of the German 9th Army Reinefarth stated that "we have more prisoners than ammunition to kill them".[1] After securing the Wola area, his troops took part in heavy fighting against the Armia Krajowa in the Old Town. In September, his forces were transferred to attack the boroughs of Powiśle and Czerniaków, where they committed further atrocities, including killing of POWs and wounded found in military hospitals. In all 150,000–200,000 Polish civilians were killed during the uprising. For his actions during the Warsaw Uprising Reinefarth was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 30 September 1944.

The war was a terrible war fought for the wrong reasons and the manner of treatment of conqured nations and the people was and is unconscionable. The post war years is very well known in the end of the National Socialist Goverment and the total destruction of Germany then divided between the victors.

leadership was vital above military style administrators. What was available, was the remaining few top military officers of the defeated German military. They were/are well trained in the manner of administration and leadership. These were as of Herr Heinz, Reinefarth, the vital resources needed for the rebuilding of post war Germany, and it was done.

There is of course no argument of war crimes committed by their authority, what the American occupational authority required, was people such as Herr Reinefarth to be the spearhead in administrated leadership. With this, over the heads of post war request for revenge and exicution of these people.

The war crimes committed at that time in the murder and torture most likly would not hold a candle to the present day crimes being committed by such organizations of death as the IS.

My reply should not be considered in the manner of defense of such people as Herr Reinefarth, but as a light of reality of that time and the needs of the many over the needs of the few.

Karl, Pieter, I am especially upset that this guy, a criminal, was still in a public service after he did what he did. His story was described in the report in Polish newspaper, they stated that the courts were very inefficient and wanted lots of documentation in order to start the action. Poles didn't have Wiesenthal, like Jews did.

Dear Jaga and Karl,

Both of you speak some truth here. It is true that the Western occupying forces in West-Germany and the East-German (DDR) state used some former Nazi's to rebuilt Germany. In East-Germany some Nazi's became communists, in West-Germany and Austria former Nazi's became politicians, mayors, police chiefs, intelligence officers, doctors, lawyers and judges. That's the way it was. Former Nazi war criminals also moved to the USA, Egypt, Syria, Spain ( then under Dictators Franco's regime), Southern-America, Great-Britain, Australia,and South-Africa.

Polish historians and journalists have done their job of research journalism. Heinz Reinefarth looked like a creepy guy without a lot of empathy. He is responsible for these atrocities which took place in Warsaw. It is unfortunate that he became the mayor of Westerland and had such a position as a politician in the West-German democracy of his Bundesland ( his state in the Federal West-German state Union of states).
