To all,
Please share with all of us, what foods will you have on the table on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day? Tell us some of the stories of Christmas past. Share with all of us your special stories of things the kids and grandkids did, or do.

We have Christmas morning brunch at my mothers. There are a few Polish items, most probably more typical of Easter fare then Christmas fare in Poland, but as the daughter of Polish born parents here in America, she makes what she wants to, when she wants to. Bialy Kielbasa, babka bread, chrusciiki will be consumed along with an egg dish, potato dish, lots of bacon, sausage,strawberries and other fruits, and a copious amount of spumanti.....

We are leaving to Texas on 24th, so I do not think we will have Polish wigilia this year like last year. But we are planning to meet my Polish friend and her Texan husband and I am bringing oplatki for all of us to share.

Even tho the high temperatures will be in the 50's, for the next week, the northwest winds are blowing thru the barbed wired fences.-Wind chill in the 20's....burr!

Well, I have been cleaning and cooking all day today. I always have a big family party the Sunday before Christmas. My grown kids go to their in-laws on Christmas eve and stay at home with the kids on Christmas day. This way we aren't rushed and can have the whole day together.
The presents are under the tree and the stockings are stuffed. As far as the food, I do most of it myself and enjoy it. I always do it up buffet style, too many people to have a sit down meal. I can't fit 19 people around my dining room table.
We are having:
Ham, Scalloped potatoes, Stuffed shells and meatballs, Candied carrots, Deviled eggs, Shrimp cocktail, Sausage balls, Hot pepperoni dip, Hot Nacho cheese sauce, Spinach & Artichoke mini bread bowls, Fresh veggie tray, Relish tray, Hot rolls, Orange pound cake, Eclairs, pettifours, various chips and dips, candies and nuts & I probably forgot something...
Everyone has their favorites and so I try to mix it up!
As you can see I am pretty busy over the holidays so you may not hear much from me for a while...

Hi All I have precise data. I have just called my aunt at whose place we spend Christmas Eve evening this year. There'd be 39 persons at the tables. Christmas Eve is called Wigilia in Polish. It is a short form for Wigilia Bożego Narodzenia (Christmas Eve). Wigilia Bożego Barodzenia means 'waiting for the birth of God'. Jesus Christ. The supper ends the advent. Relatively new tradition says there have to be 12 dishes at Wigilia supper (Kolacja wigilijna). My family follows this new tradition. All dishes must be lent food. Which virtually means no red meat. And no vodka or wine until midnight! Not even for Święty Mikołaj (Santa Claus) 1. herring in olive - śledź w oleju 2. herring in sour cream - śledź w śmietanie 3. herring in swet marinade - śledź na słodko 4. beetroot soup with uszka dumplings - barszcz z uszkami 5. mushrooms and saurekraut dumplings - pierogi z grzybami i kapustą 6. potato and cheese dumplings - pierogi ruskie 7. cabbage with sauerkrut with mushrooms - 'lent' bigos 8. fried fish in marinade -ryba 'po grecku' 9. carp in jelly - karp w galarecie 10.fried zander - sandacz smażony 11.kulebiak 12.kutia Mmmmm, can't wait

Do you hire a cook for the night? hahahaha Of course! But it is two years now since the Church decided to allow meat during Christmas Eve. So, you can eat everything now. But it doesn`t suit to have pork ...... I can`t see carp Jewish style. I know it is popular in Krakow only, but do Warsavians ever cook it?

Livia...sounds like lots of fun for you with 39 people dining. I like the borscht, peirogi, bigos, not really a fish eater. Only Fridays I eat fish (still used to the old rules) I do like grilled swordfish, sometimes salmon. I love lobster, shrimp only as a cocktail. Does your aunt do all the cooking or does everyone contibute. What things do you have for dessert.

Pawian, the church changes the tradition stays. Karp Jewish style - I thought it is carp in jelly? Btw. how to properly name 'karp w galarecie' in English, my dear teacher? Is carp in jelly ok? Charles, don't believe Pawian! It is true that kutia looks like parrots' feed but it is a parrots' feed with a lot, A LOT of rum. Kulebiak is just that. The stuffing may be or may be not delicious. Chris, not a fish eater here either, but I like the zander. We have a special family squadron of 5-6 to do the cooking. Every several years we have such a gathering with many family coming. I was told t the biggest get-together was over 70 people. The dessert are cakes, including some like Piwo shown. Kutia is also usually eaten at the end as a dessert, not at the beginning which I know happens. The real "cake madness" begins on Christmas Day only. And the cakes festival is on Easter ;D ;D ;D
