As a youngster when I lived in Michigan I went to a couple of Smelt runs and later almost ate myself sick with a belly ful of Smelt. I don't think I ever caught a Yellow Perch that weighed more than a 1/2 pound and a 1/2 pound Yellow Perch was a heavy weight. When I visit Michigan I always order "Perch". Here in the Tidewater area Shrimp, Flounder, Crab Cakes, Rock Lobster and She Crab Soup are about as common as McDonald hamburgers. ;D ;D

yellow perch are very boney. I guess my dad was a mean guy with a fillet knife! I don't remember them as boney, and I was quite picky about fish bones when I was young. When i head to Ohio I try to get to Fairport Harbor on Lake Erie and enjoy a great perch dinner at Brennans. Kai

When you get to Fairport Harbor you can do a little Pickeral fishing in Lake Erie. I heard that Lake Erie is a good place to catch Pickeral and there are special rigs for it. Good luck. ;D

jj,
The smelt you talk of in the runs, is that in a lake by you? We have them here in Lake Michigan also. I, myself, don't care for them. Do you cook them with the heads on, and not cleaned out, like some do?

In the store we can get them cleaned.
