It's me again A wheat wafer like the wafer used in communion is often used as an underlining in certain kinds of pierniki and lebkuchen. My German friends have told me I can find it in good German delis or baking supply houses. I have hit a dead-end...I can find no place on the internet where these are carried nor in any of the baking supply house catalogs that I have. Any ideas? There is a German bakery one town over from me that I will telephone tomorrow as well as a German deli in the large town south of where I live. I haven't been to the german deli in ages, so perhaps it is not there any more. Thanks again for help GM

Oh this is a hard one GM. My SIL was telling me about this cookie that her mom made as a child. It was just oblaten and chocolate layer upon layer. (Her mom is from Austria and made the best struedel) A few years ago we tried to find the recipe and the oblaten and it was tuff hunting this one down. I have since seen it in Marshalls in a tin and also TJMaxx stores. Do you have any there where you live. You might get lucky and come across a tin and less expensive than retail.

Suzanne....Thank you That is just what I am looking for What word(s) did you use to find the site? Or did you know about the site already? Hollister...I did search the PolArt site...and found the oplatek...before I read Suzanne's message I figured I could always buy them in bulk (the least expensive) and make square lebkuchen or piernik and I'd still have plenty of oplatek left over for many Christmas Eves, for my children, their friends and probably even grandchildren rdy...yes we have a TJMaxx here...I was planning on stopping in tomorrow for a little R&R Husband calls it my TJMaxx fix. I'll be on the looout for those cookies as I've read about them, but never tasted any. TJMaxx has nice little goodies - and yes, a little cheaper than retail - to round out Christmas gifts or stockings or whatever. Thanks all for the tips and work getting them to me...I appreciate them all I'll let you all know how my baking turns out... GM

GM, I ended up just doing a Google search for "Oblaten" and a couple of US-based German food stores came up and this was one of them. I had never heard of that website before, but they have quite a selection of German foods! I think I gained a couple of pounds just looking at all the stuff there. The prices seem pretty reasonable. It even gave me a Christmas gift idea for my son: he's really into gummy candies and they have a whole selection of Haribo ones, which I've never seen in the US before.
Are you going to make Lebkuchen with these wafers, or are you making a Polish specialty?
