1 cup lard or crisco is that the same as smalec? ;D If it is Leslie won't eat it! Many years ago I had the "opportunity" to try an apple pie that the pie crust was made using deer lard! It was awful - I think I have the taste finally out of my mounth by now.

Depends on where the smalec is rendered from.

Wow.. opportunity, that's one way to put it. Your perception of deer lard is right on the mark. I've been eating and enjoying wild venison for 31 years now, and deer fat IS NOT good. It is to be trimmed off and discarded at every opportunity. I saw our family in Mikołajówek greasing the pans with pig fat (big chunk), but you wouldn't want to do that with deer!
