the same trend like in the US, Poland, Hungary, Phillipines - election of a populistic president: Jair Bolsonaro
He was helped by a fact that there is a huge corruption scandal in Brazil and Luna, ex-president was imprisoned. He was still running for a president from the prison, but then he was banned.
Here is a good video about Bolsonaro and Brazil's recent political history:

Jaga,
I saw a documentary of this guy on the Dutch television yesterday. This guy is a creap, who openly called for murder and slaughter of opponents. This is a very bad character. Worse than Donald Trump, Geert Wilders, Thierry Baudet, the Alternative für Deutschland leaders Jörg Meuthen, Alexander Gauland and Alice Weidel. Worse than Heinz-Christian Strache of Austria. Heinz-Christian Strache (born 12 June 1969) is an Austrian politician serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Austria since 2017. He also has been Minister for the Civil Service and Sport since January 2018 and Chairman of the Right-wing populist, national conservative, German nationalist, Anti-immigration and Eurosceptic Freedom Party (FPÖ) since April 2005. Worse than Jarosław Kaczyński, Viktor Orbán and Nigel Paul Farage of Ukip and the pro-Brexit, Eurosceptic political pressure group organisation Leave Means Leave.
Bolsonaro's political views have been described as nationalist and populist in nature, and he is an advocate of far-right policies. He claims that torture is a "legitimate practice" and says that he would try to pass new legislation regarding the introduction of life imprisonment to the Brazilian penal code. Journalist Glenn Greenwald called Bolsonaro "the most misogynistic, hateful elected official in the democratic world".
Throughout his political career, Bolsonaro has made a number of admiring comments about the Brazilian military dictatorship which ruled the country from 1964 to 1985. He said in 1993, eight years after the return of democracy, that the military regime had "led to a more sustainable and prosperous Brazil". Bolsonaro has publicly referred to the military dictatorship as a "glorious" period in Brazil's history, and that the under the military dictatorship, Brazil enjoyed "20 years of order and progress". In December 2008, Bolsonaro said that "the error of the dictatorship was that it tortured, but did not kill".
Bolsonaro has also repeatedly made admiring comments about a number of other Latin American dictatorships. He praised Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori as a role model for his use of military intervention against the judiciary and legislature. In a 1998 interview with Veja magazine, Bolsonaro praised the Chilean dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, and said the Pinochet regime, which killed over 3,000 Chilean citizens, "should have killed more people"
In a May 2002 interview with the Folha de S.Paulo, Bolsonaro told the newspaper, "If I see two men kissing in the street, I will beat them." He then publicly defended beating gay children by saying: "If your child starts to become like that, a little gay, you take a whip and you change their behavior."
In a public speech in April 2017, Bolsonaro said that he had five children, that the first four were male and that for the fifth he produced a daughter out of "a moment of weakness".
So, you see what a nice, cosy, friendly and civilized (sophisticated) fellow this man is. It says something about the state of the Brazilian society and human condition in that country that this man is popular.
Cheers, Pieter

Jaga and Pieter Yes, also do I agree with you both with this man," Bolsonar,". Even with the high rate of crime currantly in Brazil and the matter of adjacent drug states along the borders of Brazil. It seems as an over kill with such a man. But,then, we do not live under this black cloud of crime that has been a run a way train in Brazil. The people are sick and tired of nothing in past done to protect against such murder rates as in Brazil. It is of this tough talk by this ex-military man that has landed him in the top position. It will be what the future brings with his actions, if he can rid the country over his tough talk of what the people expect, then well is done. If he in turn, turns against the people, he may need his military for self protection. He {Blosonar} does have one admirer though, and the name is Trump. www.theguardian.com/world/2018/oct/29/jair-bolsonaro-brazil-trump-rightwing-axisKarl

Pieter,
I was in Victoria and in Spirito Santo province for a couple of weeks. I did not realize that the situation of women is so difficult there. But maybe because of that we were working to build a center of mother and child run by Methodist Church. I was not updated with all the details. I still remember this shocking camera capture of a husband killing his wife a couple of months ago.
