Karl, thanks for wishes. Pieter, thank for sharing the New Year celebration from Arnhem. I hope that this year will be good for all of us. Maybe we just need to take things as they come without thinking too much about it ahead of time.
For me, this was also a difficult year, although at least I was fully employed in Idaho National Laboratory. I was working way to hard trying to prove that I deserve this job. I had my share of problems adding up John's cancer. At least for now we are all at home and this is the most important.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU - Kai, John,

... and a Happy New Year is coming within the hour to Alaska, so I wish you all a very good year! I am trying to add a composit of two photos I took in 1974 showing the view of Tomorrow - which, on new year's eve means that Tomorrow is also Next Year - so the photo shows (sans snow) what you would see if you looked from 2018 to 2019, possible only across the global International Dateline! Kai, that is a beautiful photo. I read about small and big Diomedes being split between both empires. So, maybe Sarah Palin was not that far away when he said that she can see Russia from her house. I really mean it We had visitors today at home - from two different parts of the world: Paris, France and Mauritius. Yesterday the temperatures were below -25 C herr in Idaho Falls.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU - Kai, John, Jaga My self had surmised you have had a difficult row to hoe and this for sure, with out the help of those you worked with. But, in light of stumbling blocks thrown at you, you over come and prospered. Many lesser folks would have given up, but not you, for once you set your sights upon your goal, you reached out and succeeded.. I knew from past replies that John was sick, but had no idea it was cancer. With to days medicine, these is no longer the dreaded desease, but one that is treatable in the manner of success. Please do keep us updated, {My self am concerned for his health and I am confident my self am speaking for others in saying so} My self am equally confident John is a fighter and he will beat this thing.. On the mundane side, here is a close-up showing the relationship between the USA, village of Wales, Alaska and Siberia. In between is Fairway Rock, infamous at the time as enabling the weather station to report "visibility 7 miles" when it was visible but the Diomede Islands were not. Then there is Little Diomede (USA) with a village but no airport, and Big Diomede where the Soviets moved the Eskimo off and had only a military outpost. The Bearing Strait is supposed to be 80 km wide, so I suppose the Diomedes are half way. Then the many currents running in every direction through the strait make navigation for Eskimo craft dangerous. It used to be October saw the end of the shipping season, as the storms of November were too deadly for barges or ships to safely navigate. How it is today I do not know, but it is ice free much longer. The rule of thumb for shipping through the Bering Strait in the springtime was "after the 4th of July" to assure it was ice free. Now the comment about Sarah Palin is perpetuation of a joke about her, when Saturday Night Live put those words in her mouth. In reality her house is / was in Wasilla, hundreds of miles away and far out of sight of the Bering Strait.

Kai,
yes, I understand that Sarah's joke was inappropriate and part of her statements that did not make too much sense.... still, as you said Alaska has some Russian heritage and it was walked through during ice age. The difference between snow cover from April 2013 until April 2018 is mind-boggling.

Karl, thanks. Life is not easy for anybody, you know it also, since you try to make your life as full as you can. Yes, dealing with cancer is another obstacle, so it is good to have friends like you.
